NOTES ON THE RACING.

(By-Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) The weathor conditions were entirely favourable for tho opening day of tho : Winter meeting at Napier. A big crowd i\urned out, and somo good racing was witnessed. Only one favourite was successful during the day, and some big .'dividends were .paid,. In the concluding vevont, tho Wellington-owned Ceylon won nfter. an exciting race, and bore out tho l good opinion often expressed of her in these columns. Her rider, S. Reid, has Muring tho last few months put up a record seldom equalled. Out of il mounts (ho lias won H races,, and been placed iu nine other race;. Julian,, Bandalero, and Faunus were Shacked in that order for tho Hack Hur-dles.-Tho two first-named beat themselves |by adopting cut-throat tactics over tli9 pirst mile, and with half a mile to go /both were visibly slowing up. Hero "Nedra took charge, and won without bering extended. The little Wairarapa mare Was not fancied by the public, and paid a'big dividend. Faunus jumped very •badly, and got into several fences, as did Sleacombe, the pair finishing well back. IWaipuroka finished on well, but could not reach the first two. Kiidonan, who. ,has been in retirement for'nearly twelve jjnonths, was well placed for about ten 'furlongs,-as was Waiaio, but tlie distanco Ifound,.out the pair of them. The Wel(lington mare Aenia ran very badly, and \seemcd unable to go tho paco in the earlier stages. To Roti, who has a slight coid, was withdrawn from the race. Tyrannic scored a lucky win in the Steeples, for, had not Wirihana '.broken 'down at. the bottom of the straight' the last, time*-he would have won easily. , .The two mentioned horses cave a splendid exhibition of jumping, but the. others were poor. Tho only other ones to finish were. Pukeroa, Longboat, and The Chief. Whcturangi fell at tho eod wall' the first time. Paparaohi Tan off. Doii Carlos fell at the gorse. Quandary slipped on tho -Hat, and came down, and Whimper fell at tho back of the course tho last time.. AJ'ter the race Wirihana was very lame, and'it was only with difficulty that lie was got oil' the couree. __ A. Julian, rider of Quandary, oroke his collar-lione, and as a consequence will bo missing from the Gisbomo and Wellington meetings, and perhaps the.National. Kilostcri,..w,lio... v was. tho. biggest outsider of the/ field, scorcd handsomely in tho Stewards' Stakes from two other outsiders. From the start, Mount. Victoria and Lord Renown led a strung-out field, but at tho bend Ladroue had taken charge from Sublime and Alexis. As they ran into the straight Tjsdrone still led, but Kilostcri fame fast on tho outside, and in a punishing finish won nicely. Bollin, ■who was well backcd, ran a fair race, as did San Pluie, but Bonnie Boy was disappointing. A peculiarity" of the race was that the placed horses were numbered 13, 14, and 15 in the l»ok, and the winner was tho biggest outsider of tho field. Scratchings reduced the Steeplechase field to six runners. Continuance was a better favourite than Sir Lethe, but ho did not see the short, price anticipated. At the start he led by several lengths, but, with half a mile gone, Captain Jinglo displaced him, and a littlo later Sir Lethe was in charge. The jumping of the trio named was especially so in the case of Captain Jingle. Donzel was also jumping well, but showing a tendency to rnri off. With the last mile entored upon. Sir Lethe, Morihiko, Captain .Tingle, and Donzel -wre in a bunch. . The first-nam-ed clouted the Hencoop very hard, and lust, hi? position, and at the next fenc# Morihiko came down. This left Donzel Hear of Captain Jingle, but the latter fiuMiod the stronger, nnd in a close finishwon'" bv a length. Continuance completed tho" course "and get third money, a furlong behind the other pair. No notice ikc;! br taken of the performance of the Grand National favourite, as in the birdeiigo ho. looked on the big side, and apparently hi« trainer had done very little with. Tieolino broke down badly, and will probably never race again. Jlis ridor dismounted, took the saddle and bridle off him. and left him wliero ho fell. ,

Prince Eddie and Fair Avenge were the i -ipiilnr selections ia tho_ Bracelet. The f'trmer wa-3 ridden in behind to-day as an <";nnfii!io!it, but ho could do no better Ihoiv. Fair Average and Aumna. rnndo (lie ninnins to tho half milo whore both c>i:npo:inded. Oomodian then took charge V.it lUru' la* y=: at tho bottom .of the

straight. Manitau then came fact, but coulil not reach Blend. The runner-up was most unlucky and should liavo won easily. Comedian, who is generally a most generous finisher, failed to run on as was expected uf him. Idealism was very unfortunate in not winning the Open Hurdles. He was chopped out at the start and lost a lot of ground, but at the half-mile lie was in a winning position. His l'ider, J:'lynn, took him to the front at. the last fence and then, thinking he only had Waterworks to beat, eased him. Elfish, who is a great finisher, then got oil terms and in the last fit'tv yards asserted himself and won by a length. Waiimtcro fell at the bottom of the course and Merriwa finished «v long way back. Prosper was tile choice of backers in the Hack Knee, but his supporters were unlucky as the Advance Gelding gut h:ullv left, at the po«t and thou only cantered behind tho field. Dinrolo was first out, but Perceler scon headed him mid led to the turn for home. Here the colours of this pair, Wee Hose, Ceylon, and Serenity were tlie most prominent and in a close finish Ceylon won by a neck, with Serenity tho same distanco away, third. The last-named came from a long way back and had he been better placed in the early stage of tho race, must havo won..
