FIELD-MARSHAL SIK GEOKGE WHITE. £y Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright London, Juno 24. Tha death has occurred of FieldMarshall Sir George Stuart White, V.C., the defender of Ladysmith. / The most recent biographical sketch of tho late Sir George White is that appearing in the new edition.of the "Encyclopedia Britannica." It is as follows:— Sir George Stuart White, the son of an Irish country gentleman, was born in County Antrim on July G, 1835. He was educated at Sandhurst, and in 18S3 joined the luniskillinsjs, with which regiment lie.'served in India (taring the Mutiny in 1857. In the second Afghan War (187880) he was second-.in command of tho Gordon Highlanders.'.whom he led in their charge at the battle of Charasiah. For conspicuous gallantry in this action, and again shortly afterwards at Kandahar, he received tho Victoria Cross. In 18S1 ho assumed command of the Gordon Highlanders; and took part in the Nile Expedition of 1884-85. As Brigadier in the Burmeso War (ISSS-S7) Ue rendered distinguished service, for which he was promoted major-general; and when Sir Frederick (afterwards Lord) Roberts returned to India from Burma in 1887, White was left in command of the force charged with tho duty of suppressing the Dacoits and pacifying tho country. This he accomplished with a thoroughness which earned the thanks of tha Government of India. He was in command of the Zhod expedition in 1890. and in 1893 he succeeded Lord Roberts as Commander-Jn-Chief in India, and during his tenure of this office directed the conduct of the Chitral exncditfnn in 1895 and the Tirah campaign in 1837. In the latter rear he was made G.n.8.. and in 1893 G.C.S.I.
