WANGANUI HARBOUR.
RATING MEA COMMISSION. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Wanganui, Juno 21. The Harbour Rating Area Commission sat again to-day. Mr. Muclcay, Mayor, and a member of the Harbour Hoard, gavo evidence in tho direction of showing that outlying districts would benefit from the proposed works. He thought the proposed area a fair one; the old one was unfair.
Mr. D. MTarlano, President of tlio Chamber of Commerce, quoted railway rates throughout the district lo show how, if the scheme were carried out, AVanganui would bo in a favourable position for capturing the trade from Wellington. Mr. W. J, I'olson, .chairman of the AVangamii County Council and a member of the Harbour Jioard. thought the area a'fair one, and said Rangitikei would benefit from the scheme equally with portions of tho AVanganui County. 'lhe County people were not satislied the scheme would be a success, but if it had to be undertaken then an equitable rating area must be defined, lie considered Itangitikei equally aliccted witli AVangamii County, so it should be in the rating area. His opinion was that country representation on th« board was inadequate. The district valuation was more than double that ot fho town, lhe population was also slightly greater; therefore it should have at. least equal representation instead of as at present being in a minority.
