AN AMEIUCAN DISCOVERY. .'The Bureau of Animal Industry, United States Department of Agriculture, reports the discovery that the bacterium of contagious abortion of cattle occurs in milk. The organism was found iu eight samples of market milk among 77 samples tested (over 11 per cent.), and in (he milk distributed by six among 31 dairies (over 19 per cent.;. The discovery was made as the result of investigations conducted by Dr. ,Tohn R. Mohler, chief of tho Pathological Division. When milk containing the organisms was injected into guineapigs, it produced lesions resembling closely those of tuberculosis. The clfcet on human beings is not known, but the circular slates that the phenomenon is ominously serious to public health, and (hat the bacillus forms another link in the long chain of facts that point unmistakably to the proper pasteurisation of all milk be)ore it is used as food as a measure essentially | necessary for the protection of the public health."
