POLAR BALLOON RELIC.
ALLEGED MESSAGE FROM ANDREI?. By Telegraph—Press Association-Copyright Sacramento, June 17. It is reported that a Californian farmer named Thomas has found a relic of the ill-fated polar balloon expedition of Major Andrec. The man discovered a wild goose with this message attached to it:—"North Pole,' 21th June, 1836.— Major Andrce." The story is unconfirmed. Mnjor Andree, a Swedish engineer, started from Spitzbergen on July 11, 18S17, in an attempt to reach the North Pole by balloon. The party pf three iu tbn balloon was never beard of again,, and its fate .has remained unknown to this day. At the end of 1!)08' a report was in circulation that a grave had b?en discovered in the far north of Labrador, with the name "Andre" on a rudo cross. It. was afterwards suggested that the lettering on the cross might have been remains of the name "Andreas," which is common among the Indians of Labrador.
