JUNIOR PHILATELIC SOCIETY
The seventh, monthly ■ meeting of tho Junior Philatelic Society was held at tho St. Paul's Vicarage on Friday evening. Fifteen members were present. The president, Air. W. Ferguson, took tho chair. Nine now members were, elected, bringing the total up to GO. Among the newcomers were Lieutenant H. J. Lancaster, R.N., and Mr. Melville; brother of Mr. Fred Melville, known to all collectors as the editor of "Tlio Stamp Lover," "The Postage Stamp," and tho Melville Handbooks.
A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. J. Mackay, the Government Printer, for showing members over tho Printing Office and explaining how tho stamps were printed; also to Mr. Jolliffe for kindly arranging the visit. The stamps of tho United States were then exhibited by Messrs. Ferguson, Collins, Rishworth, and others, while Mr. 0. Borer read an interesting paper on history, as depicted in these stamps. The United States of America have issued 1000 different stamps with more than 200 different designs. All the stamps are beautifully engraved. The favourite issue is tho Columbus series of JG engravings picturing incidents in tho life of America s discoverer. Tho Discovery of America, Columbus welcomed at Barcelona, Columbus in Chains, Queen Isabella pawning her jewels, and Columbus restored to Royal favour, aro some of the subjects. Tho issue of IS9B, depicting life, in- the back-blocks, shows' the respect the "Yankees" have for their friends up country. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Rov. "A. Jf. Johnson for so kindly lending a room.
