v MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The fortnightly meeting of tho Ciiv toHucil was held last night, the Mayor (Mr. D. Jl'Laren) presiding. There were a so present Councillors 1!. Fletcher, (i. bhirtcliflo, J. J). Fitzgerald,, A. 31. Hindmarsh, .Ino. Fuller, jun., L. 31'ICenzie, Jas. tiodber, .A. K. Atkinson, J. Trevor, G. I'l'ost, F. Cohen, and John Smith. Apologies for absence wore received from Councillors Barber ami Tregcnr. Tho Finance and Property Committee recommended, and it was agreed, that the of a corporation tenant in )\ illis street to have an alteration made "} the front of his shop be granted, provided lie pays half the cost of the alterations, and also agrees to take a five years' leaso of tho shop. That the drivers of tho drays hired by the corporation who petitioned the council lor an increase lit the rate of pay be informed that their request cannot be acceded to, as it is considered that their present pay, equivalent to I'l per day for two horses and a drav, is sufficient. That an offer to annotate the corporation set of Consolidated Statutes for the sum of iM Us. Gd. be accepted. On the recommendation of the Baths and City Reserves Committeo it was decided that the tender of Mr. K. G. Knight be accepted for the lease of Town Belt section 21. The amount of the tender is ,£lO per annum, nnd the area of tho section is approximately three acres. It was also decided that the Hospital and Charitable Aid Department be informed that permission cannot be granted for the erection, of clothes lines on the Town Belt section at the rear of St. Helen's Hospital, as the section is leased. Street lamps were authorised to be erec-' ted at Konini Road, Waipapa Koad, Huia Road, Rata Road, Kainui Road, Hataitai, and at Harbour View Road, Northland. An application for the removal of lamp No. Sl2l, Adelaide Road South, to a imposition further south, was not entertained as the electrical engineer considered the present position to be. the best ono for the street. It was resolved to repudiate any liability in connection with a claim for damages for alleged failure on the part of the Lighting Department to supply electrical energy for power purposes to a firm at Khandallah. A penalty of ,£lO was authorised to be imposed in connection with the late fulfilment of Messrs. Stewart Timber Company's contract for the supply of crossarms to the Lighting Department. Permission was granted for the erection of a nurses' home at the corner of Abel Smith Street and Kensington Street. The Legislation Committee reported that it had considered the draft bill proposed by the Karori Borough Council, providing for the drainage of a portion of the borough through the Ivaiwarra watershed, and had referred the bill to the city engineer and city solicitor to redraft certain clauses and submit tho bill to the committee.
