THE BLASCHECK REGITAL.
A GIETE.D ENTERTAINED. That talented entertainer Mr. Joseph Blascheck returned to ' the Opera House last evening to charm and amuse the public with his placid art. . Blascheck is about as clover an all-round evening dress entertainer of his class as has been scon in Wellington for «v long time. His 'manner is refined and ingratiating; he employs a nice degree of subtlety in making his points; and with the aid of an expressive voice, carefully modulated to the occasion, and a mobile lace, invests his work with the finer nuance of meaning. His broader character sketches are marked by a judicious restraint and innato refinement, which stamps him «is an artist of rare perception and «ecutivo ability. He can be finely emotional, too, where necessity arises. 'With him it never becomes bathos. Take, for instance, the little sketch, "His First 'trousers, in which a father, addressing his son, expresses his pride, hopes, iears, as to his future. A trifle, perhaixs—but it was done with 11 delicacy and intuitive grace which readily touched a responsive chord. "The Country .T.P.," in which the vagaries of a rural justice arc comically burlesoued, raised roars of laughter, and tho popular monologue, Devil Maj Caie, was recited with a full dramatic appreciation of the theme. J£r. Blascheck. was vcrv happy, too, in his Irroad character sketches, such as tho yokel romance, \ot Vor do J ee Luv Oi, and Not Such a Fool," the coster, "My Pal. ,loc, and the German Jew, "Greifeiistein (in which the humour did notcxactly bubble). One of the gems of tho evening was tho recital of .Tames "Whitcomb poem, "An Old Sweetheart of Mine\ these are but a few of the many contributions to tho programme by Mr. Blascheck, but they nerve to show the range arid quality ot tho goods he deals in. His monologues are greatly enhanced by the sympathetic accompanying of Miss Mildred Wngliton, herself a singer and entertainer of unusual capacity. Miss Brighton lias a welltrained soprano voice, with an case 111 production that makes it admirablv adaptable to the varied work she undertakes. Her selection of eongs ranged from Gounod s "Serenade" (sung in tho original French) and the melodious- "Come Back to Erin " to tho serio-comic "Mother's Maxims" and,"Jest Her Way." Her efforts found immediate favour, and double encores were the rule. Jliss Brighton and Mr. Blascheck combine successfully Hi musical sketches of a humorous character. Among those which found favour last evening were the action recital, "The House that* Jack Built," "Conversations," "Whistle It," and "Carrie and Harrie." Mr.-Blascheck and Miss Wrighton will appear again this, and to-morrow evening; The entertainment they provide is highly commended.
