POPULAR RAILWAY OFFICER. . (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, Juno S. Mr. J. Henley, late coaching foreman at the Palmerston railway station, who has just retired on superannuation, was entertained at a smoke concert at the Railway H:dl last evening by members of the railway staff here. Mr. 11. C. Smith, stationmaster, presided, and a number of prominent residents of the town .were also present.'. In. proposing tho 'toast of ..the guest of the evening, Mr. C. A; Dawson, traffic inspector, presented Mr. Henley with two easy chairs, one for Mrs. Henley and mle 'for himself. On behalf of tho commercial men of Falmerston, Mr. R. S. Abraham presented Mr. Henley with a valuable gold watch. Quite a number of speakers made reference ■ to' tlw efficient and courteous manner in which Mr. 'Henley had carried out his dunes. During tho evening a programme of vocal music was rendered. Mr. Henley left to-day for Auckland, where he has taken up a farm. Mr. C A. Poulsen, who has been chief reporter on the "Mauawatu Standard" frtr somo time, has been unpointed subeditor of the "New Zealand Farmer.' TUv. Poulseu takes up duty in about a month. At a meeting of the Mauawatu branch of the Royal New Zealand Association of His Majesty's Veterans last evening. Captain Hewitt presiding, it was decided to form a benevolent fund for the assistance of members. Tho council of the Chamber of Comm/'ree has appointed a deputation to wait on the Government in respect to various matters connected with railway and postal •Yu old ago pensioner, named Mary Ann Bell, was found dead yesterday morning at the residence of Mr. Peter kanudas, a., spcond-hand dealer in Palmerston, where slio rented a room. She retired to I>ccL in usual on the previous evening, but was heard coughing during the night. As she did not make an appearance next morning, n .visit was paid to her room, and she was found lying (lea* in bed.
