Lord Denman (Governor-General of Australia) opened the small arms factory at Lithgow to-day. He commended Australia's preparedness for defence. Australia, with a wide territory and spare population, has powerful neighbours with enormous populations, and who would he only too glad to get hold of the country if by war they could do so. The Hon. G. F. Pearce, Minister for Defence, said Australia must have a defence force that was not a sham. It would prove costly, but he believed the people were prepared for the cost. The previous day the first cordite had been turned out in Australia. They should hire plant to make guns and use the cordite. •
