6 A SUCCESSFUL CAMPAIGN. MORE THAN £5000 SUBSCRIBED. LIST OP THE PICTURES PRESENTED. Tho picture purchase fund is now well beyond tho minimum of £"M 0 fixed by the City Council at tho commencement of tho movement, and the organisers have therefore earned the promised corporation subsidy of ,£'looo. This result was attained on Saturday by the generous gift of .£IOO from a public-spirited citizen who wishes his benefaction to bo anonymous. There is still a number of contributions i'rom various sources to come in, so that the linal result will' show an amount very considerably in excess of i'oOOO. The organisers can therefore fairly claim that their campaign has been a complete success. The exhibition of British pictures attracted another great crowd of visitors yesterday afternoon, tho gallery being packed. There can be no doubt but that this collection of British paintings has greatly stimulated the public interest in art, and it ought now to be the aim of the proper authorities to keep that interest alive. The gallery will be open throughout to-day, and citizens aro reminded again that it will close finally in Wellington on Wednesday next. Tho time available for viewing tho pictures is therefore strictly limited. Private advices from Masterton, where active steps aro being taken to raiso.a fund for the purchase _of a Masterton picture for presentation' to the National Gallery, go to show that a sum of at least C CIOO will be raised for the purpose.. Mr. Sunimerell, of Levin and Co.'s. branch, is acting as local secretary, and is working most energetically to make the movement a success there. The donations to date are:— £ e. d.
