A GRIEVANCE VENTILATED.
THE GREYTGWN HEADMASTERSHIP. The Wellington Education Board ye#« terday had its attention officially directed to some dissatisfaction which exists with regard to She appointment of a headmaster at tho Greytottu District High School in succession io Mr. A. U. Charters, re* ccntly appointed to the board's inspectorate. The Mayor of Grey town forwarded copies of resolutions adopted by a public meeting held at Greytowii recently to protest against the action of the Education Board in tanking the appointment without the calling for applications. Mr. W. C. Buchanan, M.P., said that he did not know whether tho reports that had appeared in the Grey town papers hsul been brought under the notice of ths board. Certain statements had then ten made that should be corrected without delay. "lias this particular appointment been made?" asked Mr. A. H. Vile.
He was informed that that was so. Mr. Buchanan did not think that it had been. Ho read tho board's minute in tho records of the proceedings at tho previous meeting. That resolution simply referred to the chairman and chief inspector tha question of transferring Mr. Davit® cither to Grevtown. or Island Bay. "This appointment has not been made by tlja board," commented Mr. Buchanan. "We gave our sanction at that jn<sei> ins," replied Mr. .1. G. W. Aitken. t _ "Then the wording of the resolution in the minutes is Misleading," observed Mr, Buchanan. Mr. A. 11. Vile moved that the action or the cli airman and inspectors b(r con* firmed. Mr. A. W. Hogg aiscliumod any w sponsibility for the appointment of Sir. Davies to Greytown. He hod left earlyat th® previous meeting and considered that the procedure of tiio board ivith retard to the appointment was irregular. Such an important position as the ueadmastership of Greytovn should have been advertised—thrown open to competition iiy tho usual way. The board had departed from its usual procedure, and, he concluded emphatically, he was not going to bo responsible for what had been done. "You aro not asked to be responsible, Mr. Hogg," retorted the chairman (Mr. R. Lee), with warnvth, "Yon should have been here." This, continued the speaker, was an excepttonol ease. The board had agreed to appoint a fourth inspector on condition that a place was found for Mr. Davies. llatl they been unable to do so, they could not have added to tho number of their inspectors, ,as they could n&t afford to apnoint that inspector and also retain Mr. Davies in his position as agricultural science (instructor. Mr. Vilo's motion was adopted and his appointment was confirmed by the board.-
