SAFETY AT SEA.
AN AUSTRALIAN DEPUTATION. By Te'.eera.Dh—Prose Association— Oosyrisht (Rec. May 27, 9.20 p.m.) Sydney, May 27. A deputation from the Trades Hall complained of the inefficient inspection of ships* boats and other life-saving appliance? and a.sked for the appointment of a "Royal Commission on the maritime industry generally. It was alleged that in hundreds of cases the boats were never used nnd stuck in the chocks, and it was doubtful if they could be lowered into the water. On some vessels fire drill was never carried out. Mr. Cann, in reply, said he was of opinion that the safety appliances on shipboard were not nil they should be. He favoured the provision of lifeboats on a parsenger-carrying ban's, and not on a tonnage basis. He denied that inspections were not properly conducted, but promised an inquiry, though in view of the prospect of the Federal Government assuming tho control of navigation he hfsilaleil to inlrodure local legislation.
