THE AUSTRALIAN DROUGHT.
GLOOMY OUTLOOK. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Auckland, May ??. Tho Australian drought is a terribly cruel visitation (writes a roMdcnt of Sydney to a relative in Auckland), niul it is Roing to have n bud reaction on business in Sydney. Stock nrc daily Iwing sold up country at a twentieth part of what they would have realised two months ago. Even the rabbits are dying through the absolute lack of any kind of sustenance. Tho drought is far worse- than tho newspapers allow. In some districts it is quite as bad as in tho great drought of a few years ago, and ruin stares hundreds in the fact , who three months ago woro counted prosperous.. Almost the only bird life visible is the crow, which attacks the sheep tho moment they arc down, picking out the eyes of the unfortunate animals. A few days ago I saw hay sold in Sydney at just ois .£1(1 ft ton. The shortage of fodder is quite abnormal, and testifies to the biirril-np condition of immense areas. Auckland farmers don't know liovr fortunately situated they nro as regards climate."
