CAPTAIN COLOMB'S SHIP.

IN THE SHOOTIXG TESTS. A gooil many people arc no doubt aware that Captain C'olomb, late of H.M.H. Encounter, now on the Australian (station, is the son of a distinguished admiral of the British service—Admiral P. If. Coiomb, who belonged to that school of late-Vic-torian Admirals Seymours, Hornsbys, l'roraantlcs, Tryons, Kennedys, Kerrs, and I others which made the navy remarkable even after tho days of "musts and sails" had gone. Of these nud others a number have written books on subjects ranging from battle practice to trout fishing, and though all have a wide circle of readers, it is hardly ovor-stating matters to say that the late Admiral Colomb's writings— "Steam Tactics,"- "The Approach at 'JVafalgar, and other books—have left a very eiearly cut mark on the naval attitude of the age. "Life father, like son" is a common adage, and it now incidentally appears (from a private letter received from a friend by Mr. Cecil Palmer, secretary of Hie Wellington branch of the Navy League) that while the Australian Squadron topped the shooting fests for the navy for the current year, Captain Colomb's ship Encounter was at the head of the list for the Australian' Squadron. At a time when it is recognised that the shooting of ships moy double or treble tho ordinary fighting co-efficient of'a. navy, this is a high honour to achieve, as the competition is very keen. Captain Colomb is at present flag captain to Admiral Sir Richard Poore, at Chatham. . . ■'
