ST. JOHN'S ON THEIR METTLE, : ROVERS UNDER-MANNED. Thistle 2 Rovers 0 Hospital ' 1 St. John's 0 Y.M.C.A S Wanderers 0 Diamonds 1 Corinthians 0 Swifts 1 Ramblers 1 The principal features of Saturday's Association football mutches in Wellington were the spirited fight by St. John's in their match against hospital, and tho conviction forced upon spectators that something is tunics with Rovers, for owe again they entered the field under-manned. Apparently the domestic ail\irs of the Rovers' Club are at pre.-ent out of hand, for the continual appearance of a shorthanded team in white jerseys is getting rather tiresome, and, besides, it is very bad for the game. Details of the plav in (he various senior mulches are as follow SWIFTS-RAMBLERS. The meeting of Swifts and Ramblers was looked forward to with interest, and this interest was maintained until tho final cull of time. Swifts bad the best of the jpro« for tho must part, and should have won, but Ramblers deserved credit for the one pom!; thev gained. The defence of the Red and White halves (W. Dart and ]\irsehbcrg) and their full-back (Davey) were mainly responsible for so small a scoro being put up ?jv llie Kcds Swifts were early on the attack, and, within five minutes of the start, C. Vessey scored from a scramble in goni-mouth. This was soon followed by another attack, but Jlittheson spoiled what chaneo the Itcds had by giving a tool Ivambleis then rallied, but. Hart set the ball rolling Inwards Swifts' goal, but l'yc-Smiih saved, and Kirsehberg (hen tiiok a long sporting chance. Towards Ihe finish a. comer in Swifts' favour was nicely headed out, and piny was removed tu mid-field, when time was called, the game ending iu a draw. Ramblers' forwards, except for spasmodic rushes, wero not to bo compared (o I lie Swift forward line, who all played well. Both goal-keepers when, called upon were found leady. ROVERS-THISTLE. A dull unintores!lng affair was the lcsuit of the match between Povers and Thistle at Dupna Street on Saturday. At the outset it can be said that Thisllo do not deserve much credit for their victory »f two -joiils to nil, because of the fact that their opponents were flaying two men .short. The wearers of the Blue shirts should havo done much butter. On tho iiiher hand, Movers deserve sonic credit for Iho way in which they kept the score down under the conditions already noted. Iri the. first he.if Thistle gave Kovers' backs plenty to do. Brooke (goal-keeper), being in good form, slaved off repeated attacks on his citadel. The first score of the match came from a nicely-centred ball by Harnett, and Doll amy, being handy, put the leather through the posls. Thistle, 1; Hovers, fl. From now on Thistle had maiiv chances of increasing their lead, but had shooting was responsible for nonsuccess. Shortly before half-time, however, Gibson secured irons Burnett, and mrule no mistake, the score then standing: Thistle, 2; Kovers, 0. Tilings did not improve much during •tho second half, and tlio only exciting bit of play was when Hownn '(Thistle's 'keeper)' made a brilliant "save." Bolton Movers' outside-left) put in a particularly hot shot aiming for a spot, just inside, the goalpost and low down. Being unable to go l at it in tlio orthodox mauner, liowan threw himself full length en the ground, and hurled tho bail outside the posts. Tlio spectators present applauded heartily, and tho applause was well deserved. Towards the end Havers endeavoured to make the pace warm, but without success, and the game ended, leaving Thistle winners by i goals to nil. Y.M.C.A.—WANDERERS, Wanderers received rather a severe drubbing in their match against Y.M.C.A. at Kelburne Park on Saturday, being defeated by five goals to nil, filter a somewhat one-sided contest. As usual, theodds of victory rested with tho team which more thoroughly understood and carried into effect the'principle of _ combination. The cohesion of the Y.M.C.A. forward ranks was noticeably good, and enabled them to break through the Wanderers' ranks time after time.. After the first preliminary scuffle, during which each side succeeded in penetrating the othel's defences and attacking tho goal, Y.M.C.A. adopted forcing tactics, and keeping tho ball welt inside Wanderers' territory, scored three goals before the first spell ended. The first of these came from M'Gowen, after a concerted rush by tho forwards. The ball struck the post aud ricocheted between the posts—always a difficult problem for the goalkeeper to grapple with. Wanderers replied with a counter attack, but the defence of Iloilis between the Y.M.C.A. posts was very sound, and they were' driven back again "over the border." I-'rom a neat centre from the wing, Phillips (Y.M.C.A.) drove Hie ball between the Wanderers' goalposts, a clean shot, and raised the score !o two to nil in favour ot' his side. The third goal came from a lively scnille ill front of the Y.M.C.A. goal-posts, in the midst of which tho ball wriggled -through. In the second half, Wanderers made a a rent ed'ori: lo rally their forces, and by vigorous play managed to compel Y.M.C.A. to act strictly on the defensive. This continned for some time, the fury of Wanderers' a I lack; iii: rushes being silent by the lime the Y.M.C.A. halves and backs had stopped them and relieved the forwards of the ball. Halfway the -spell Wanderers tired visibly, and Y.JI.C.A. rehirned to the attack once again, scoring two liioro goals (by Baker and Phillips>, before the whistle blew. Mr. J. B. Paton was referee. HOSPITAL—ST. IOHN'S. The men of the Porirun Mental Hospital staff's team had enough to do to beat St. .Tolui's at Porirua on Saturday, and scored once only. Both teams made the pace a cracker, aud tho game for tho greater part of tho time was fast aud full of interest. Towards the end, however, the pace began to tell, particularly on the St. John's team, and the Hospital men began to assume tlio ascendency. At the kick-off St. John's very nearly stored from a lively sally by the right wing, but Mawbey's shot, aimed too high, struck the liar. Tlio Hospital men then retaliated, and Walls, tUe St. John's goalkeeper, was peppered by the Hospital artillery, and saved soino close shots. St. John's rightwing then look up the offensive, broke through, and all but scored, Cockburn (the Hospital goalkeeper) making a lucky save. Except for an occasional sortie, the St. John's men remained ou their side otiiio , line during the greater part of the second spell, pressed back by their opponents. Prom a sharp skirmish in front of tho St. John's goal, Hughes (Hospital centreforward) slipped the ball through, scoring the first and last goal of the matcli. Hospital continued to press their opponents till the end, and when iho whistle sounded the St. John's literally had their backs to the wall, defending their stronghold. Mr. H. Yeoman was referee. DIAMONDS-CORINTHIANS, Corinthians suffered defeat' at the hands of Diamonds, at Jliramar, ou Saturday afternoon, by one goal to nil. During tho first lialf of th» game the Blacks were unmistakably lou formidable i'or Corinthians, but during the second spell the play was somcwhut reversed, Corinthians putting in a number of good shots which were just saved in time by Patrick (Diamonds' Diamonds took the field with one man short, and at once manoeuvred tho ball into Corinthians' quarters. Lowe dribbled the ball up the wing, and put iu a good centre, which was intercepted bv Butter, playing at back for Diamonds, who passed it, to Ives, the latter putting in a shot which passed harmlessly over the bar. Diamonds once liioro carried the ball into Corinthians' quarters, Lowe putting in a fine centre to Black, who placed Ihe ball between Iho posts, making the score: Diamonds, 1; Corinthians, 9. At this stage of tho game, Bradiiurg, playing for Corinthians, put iii numerous Rood shots to the Diamond goal-keeper, which were the narrowest of shaves. Ives, centre-forward for Corinthians, seemed to be a little off colour, ail hough several of his rushes looked dangerous. During the second spell, Corinthians seemed, to awake to the fact that they had not. scared, and for some time the'v vigorou.-ly attacked Diamonds' goal, but nothing came of their efforts, although Willis -••cut i" a splendid shot which was neally diverted over Ihe bar bv Patrick. The—iron:.' kickins and good judgment of Puller pulled Corinlhians nut of numerous tight corners. .Mr. J. Tine was refeir;-. MATCH AT SHANNON.
