TRAMWAY TRAFFIC.

* THE SHORTAGE OF CAES. The existing' .shortage of cars 011 the local tramway service was somewhat inconveniently exemplified on Saturday afternoon, when largo numbers of people were milking for Athletic Park. Over .thirty persons, who were waiting at Courtenay l'laee, found it impossiblo to get a car/for the Park, during the space of a quarter of an liour, from 2.10 p.m. onwards. An Island Bay car lan through just after that hour, but it was packed, and only two or three prople got •aboard at Courtenay l'laee. A few minutes later a car bound for the Park came along. Eight or nine people got in, and the car continued its journey packed to its fullest capacity. The only other Newtown-route car that arrived at Courtenay Place before five minutes to three o'clock was one bonntl for Constablo Street. At five minutes to throo a single-decker bound for Thorndon Quay was turned back, and dispatched to the Park. The waiting passengers, most of whom had waited for fifteen minutes, completely filled tile car, one person bavin? to stand. The tramway authorities did their utmos( In cope with the departing traffic from the Park in the evening. In addition to the ordinary Wand Bay cars, no les-: tlum fifteen specials were pressed into service, a number that is said tn constitute a record, as compared with anv previous similar occasion. The nuestion of increasing tlfe tramway rnlling-skick is one that is to bo "one into almost immediately by the Tramways Committee of the City Council. A 'report upon the subject lias been furnished by the Tramways Board. As tliinsrs now stand, it is impossible for the tramway authorities to adequately meet the demands for temporarily augmented services that are continually arising.
