A special meeting of the Hutt Borough Council was held last evening to consider a petition signed by IKI7 ratepayers, protesting against the proposal to establish a noxious trade in Peronc. Councillor Kempthorne was elected to tho chair. Tho chairman stated that Hid matter was one of importance. He moved, "That tho council views with grave concern tho proposed establishment of works in IV wuo by Messrs. i'ny ami Co., which are likely to bo olfensive to health and property in the Jiutt Valley, and resolyo to j send a sl'roug protest to tho Peteno Council, and also to tlio Health Department, I against granting a permit for tlie satne." Alter discussion tue motion was carried on the voices, Councillor Koots being the only dissentient. PETONK COUET. Tho monthly sitting of the Petone j Court was held before Sir. h. G. Keid, B.iL, yesterday, Augustus Dmamiei Norliug appeared ou two charges of procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. On the first charge he was nucd 405., with costs 7s. Un tho remaining charge ho was convicted ftiid discharged. A similar charge was brought against Henry i'irth. As this was t:be second lapse under tho samo order, a liuo of JSI was imposed. Annio iJexton brought charges of assault against Kmma Morrison and Alice 'J'u l'uni. Jlr. "Salek, wiio appeared for Mrs. Ucxton, slated tliat tho ease was soiucwixat extrrioriliiiary.'• ■". Jfi'-sV Dextou leased an area of land trom soiuo Natives at 'i'aita, and both defendants received o Email percentage of the rent, about Bd. a week tat-Js. 'i'lie defendants had got an idea that the informant was backward in her rent. That was tho cause of the trouble. Mrs. Dexton, in her evidence, stated that sho went to Alice To Puni's house to settle the lease. Bhe was there insulted, and one of the defendants caught hold of her by the arm while the other struck her several times in tho face. Both pleaded not guilty. Bninia -Morrison said liiat sho received much provocation, while Alice To Puui denied the charge altogether. The charge against tho latter was dismissed. As regards the other cast;, his Worship said he i'elt inclined to dismiss that also. Undoubtedly thero had been provocation. In tho circumstances a fine of 10s. would be inflicted.
At tho Jvivcnilo Court, two boys, aged twelve years, appeared on a charge of smoking. They were warned by tho magistrate that the practice was ono very dangerous to their health, and connoted and discharged. Three other boya were prosecuted for doing wilful damage to fifteen electric light globes, the property of the Gear Meat Company. They were similarly dealt with. One of the;* boys was also charged with the theft of a watch. There were several previous convictions against this lad. His mother appeared, and staled that sho was endcuvoiirinjj.to place her son on a farm. Tho magistrate faid that, in order to allow this to bo done, ho would merely enter a conviction. If the boy camo before the Court again lie would liko to make it quito plain that it was very prolmbie that he would be sent to an industrial school. It was tho only way to deal with boys who could not oo kept under control.
