(By Telcgraph-Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, May 23. The tanners of J?ongote» have decided to open u co-operativs bacon curing factory with a capital of ,£6003 in £2 shares. A committee hus boon appointed to canvass tho district for shareholders. Another of our old settlers has passed away in the person of Mrs. Maxwell, of liunnythcrpe, relict of the late William Maxwell, aged G5 years. The hie Mrs. Maxwell, with her husband, went to Bunnyth'orpe to reside some thirty years ago, when the district was practically a wilderness of bush. They were among the early pioneers of the district, and did thoir share in contributing towards its prosperity. Tho Mayor and Mayoress'(Mr. and Mrs. J, A. Nash) were cntprtitimxl at a complimentary "social" at the Municipal Hall last evening. About three hundred were present, and Mr. S. Russell, chairman of Mr, Nash's Mayoral election committee, presided. The chairman referred to tiie work done by the Mayor during tho past four years, and aho referred io the assistance which the town had received from the Mayoress. Mr. D. Iluk-k, M.P., also spoke. Meetings of employers interested m tho fresh, demands being made by tho timber yards and sawmill hands and by llie Drivers' Union, weiv held at the Mannwatu Employers' Association's offices yesterday. In tho'-first-named dispute, Messrs. A. K. ! Bennett, P. Sollitt. and C. N. Clausen were appointed assessors to watch the ini tercsts of the employers. Tn the case of ! the drivers, Mr. J. Aitchison was appointed the employers' representative to attend it conference to be nelu in \ielliiißton 051 May :!!). . Tho director o? tho local Technical School. Mr. F. 1). Onie, is arranging to inaugurate a class for -vegetable and flower gardening. Mr. I'. In the senior games Phoenix beat Office by four goals to one, this being the first time that the latter team has been defeated for four years. Old Boys beat Palmerston by three to meeting was convened last evening with a view to form a Hockey Referees' Association, Mr. C. H. Warden in tho chair. Thfr proposal te form such an association was affirmed, and the follnwinir officers were elected President. Mr. C. H. Warden: vice-presidents, Messrs. L George, and 13.'Tucker; secretary and treasurer. Mr. J. H. Gray: management committee, Messrs. Hodgson. NaysmiHv. Tuckor Opie. and Crnmn.
