NOTES ON THE RACING.

SUCCESS OF OUTSIDERS. (By Telegraph.—Special Reporter.) Wanganui, May 23. Early this morning heavy rain commenced to fall in Wanganui, and continned until after the races had commenced and as it was also exceedingly coldi the-, attendance. at the racecourse, was somewhat smaller than it would havo been otherwise. The going, hoover, was not seriously affected, and largo fields and interesting racing, were the order. A. feature of; the racing was the.success of the outsiders, only tivo actual favonrites being first past the post. • During the afternoon M-erry Frank was ■withdrawn from the Borough Handicap, but there were still left a dozen horses to go to the post... Khamsin was tho \ actual favourite,. but / Ineuru, who had sprinted well on tho' morning of tho race, carried nearly as much money. Tho start was delayed, some minutes through Lady Kilchcran bolting back towards the enclosure. When tho tapes were released, Gladiole and Allurement showed out in front, but Simple Sam quickly took charge, and led by several lengths. Rounding the bottom bond Simple Sam was followed by Allurement, Gladiole, Afterthought, and St. Tqnoy,' with Khamsin and jfakara further back. At'the, home turn tho field closed up. but onco in tho straight, Allurement drew out, and won comfortably from Afterthought with tho favourite, third, closely followed by Throve and Simple Sam. Gladiolo was sixth, Ineuru and Makara never ap- ' pcared to have winning chances. Thero were' only five starters in tho Hack Steeples, and tho connections of Hautere made no secret of the fact that tho Euroclydon gelding was an odds on change. Indeed,' it was only a matter of standing up, and he must have' won by nearly, a furlong. Jl'Elynn kept him in a nice position until six furlongs from home when ho let him run to tho front. ' The race then appeared to be all over, but at the . double,- half a milo from home, Hautero ran down tho first fence, and fell over tho wing of the second. This left Drudgery to win easily from Makiri. M'Flynn wa3 badly shaken, and unable to tako the mount on Okailiau in the next race. This was a stroke of misfortune for the jockey named who viewed the race from the stand, and saw Deerey Tide Okaihau to victory in the big event of. the meeting. Winiata and Zanto were tho only withdrawals from tho Wanganui Steeples for which Continuance was made a warm favourite. Whakaweira and Antarctic carried tho most money, and of tho others, on .subsequent running the heavy bettiii£ on Continuance was fully justified, for the'Gisborne. horse ran a great race / under his /heavy impost, and .his.-per-formance, in finishing'Second.'ih his first race oyer the big country, .stamps him; as one of -the best 'chasers in the Dominion. _ A : meeting between him and Corazon will be looked forward to with interest. Antarctic, though ho finished well, never looked like winning. Whakaweira, after making a faulty jnmp in the second round, had mado up a lot of tho ground which ho had lost thereby, and sis furlongs from home, looked liko playing a prominent part in the finsh, but tho next fence brought him down. Do-, ivindo was kept a long way out of it in the early stages, arid finished well - enough to suggest that he might havo filled a place had his rider kept him closer up m the early part. Sir Lethe, after running a great race, found tho distance too far, but Pleiades had not gone far enough when ho, fell to give a true indication of what his chances would have been had he got round safely. Tho winner, Okaihau, though fancied ]>y his party, was not in much demand with the general public, rind ho was allowed to pay a big price. He had, however, some fair performances to his credit, and, on the last occasion thnt hb won at Gisborno, he carried something like 12st. ,T. Deerey handled him to advantage, aad, when tho .last .two furlongs were entered upon, his pull in tho weights enabled him to comfortably beat Continuance. Glenmore, who held n prominent position throughout, finished a good third, and then followed Dorando, Antarctic, Sir Lethe, and The Spaniard. ' Taiaha. who was next, walked past tlm post, and KViipetipeti was tile only other one to finish. opliinx and Silvcx* Cluse wero tho popii- i Jar fancies in tho Kaitoke Hack Hurdles, for which there were thirteen starters Kauroa was tho first .to show out, but le Koti soon displaced him, and led past the stand, followed by Dogger Bank ICatiroa, Nedra, and Sphinx, with tho rest strung out. Six furlongs from home, Silver Cluse shot forward from tho ruck, and, half a mile from home, was alongsido le Koti. i lls pair raced together to . the. last hurdle, where Silver Clu=o drew out, and won. niccly by two lengths from le Ron. Ihen followed Bismarck, Torbelle, and Kaurou. .With the exception of Canadian, lo Koti was the outsider of the field. Woolloomooloo,' Passive, and Euroco wero withdrawn from the Century Hurdles, leaving a dozen runners. Koran was made a slightly better favourite than The Native, and several of tho others were also well backed. It waa not tho day for favourites, and both The Nativo and Korun were beaten out of places When the start was effected The Native went to the front, and led past the stand followed by Sandy Paul, Koran, and Gaelic. Going down the back of the course the first time The Nativo' drew right away, and . led by' fully fifteen lengths from Sandy Pahl, with tho rest of the fiftJd tailed right out. Passing the stand the' second time the field had closed up on The Native, who was closely attended by Iferrie Lad, Sandy Paul, Gaelic, Koran, and Seaman. The strong pace pet by The Native commenced to toll as tho last six furlongs was entered upon, and Stevens, Seaman, and Darby Paul appeared to be tho only ones that coitld trouble the leader. Three furlongs from homo it was apparent that Darby Paul had tho nieasuro of tho field, a/nd, onco over tlio last hurdle, he ran in a comfortable winner from Slovens and Seaman ,who wero followed by Gaelic, The Nativo, am! Sandy Paul. Tho winner was well supported in doubles, and had Con tho Shaughraun won tho Connolly Handicap, the ring would have been depleted of a large sum. , There wero only eight Tunners in tho Cronolly Handicap, and Jlerrivonia,, with Deeley in the saddle, was made tho greatest favourite of the day. , The Merriwce mare was one of the last to find her foot, bnt, at tho enil of ;t mile, sho had taken a. good position, and in tho last half furlong sho won very easily. Golden Loop v/as unfortunate in being beaten by Jliscal, but may reverse positions when next they meet. Of the- others Con the ) Shaughraun shaped best. No fewer than fifteen runners turned out for to® Purua Hack Handicap, and 3,11 mtrrtioh to a god start. Waikehua ,ws.s first to take the lead, and, with Simple ..am, mac.o most of the running, but. when> well in tho straight, Tiwari ran to the front, and, won by a couple of lengths. -SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. {By Telegraph—Press Association.) • Wanganui, ifav-23. A feature of the racing was the excellent starting by Mr. Harley. NOTES lON THE RACING. IBy Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Oamaru, May 23. The weather was perfect for Cup day at Oamaru, and the attendance was up to the average. Tho racing was full of surprise's, and tho two principal events went to outsiders. A very poor lot was the general ppinion of the hurdle field. Master Paul is not ready, and with tho exception oi Kjug Try nnd Mercedo, tho remainder were second-raters. At the start Mercedo rushed to the front, but King Try, though jumping wretchedly, always had too much pace for the Welbeck gelding, and' Cameron was sitting quietly on his mount. Ho levelled nicely all tho fences, but, at tho finis-h, ran away from the "field and won very easily. Master Paul was pulled about a good deal over the first mile, or lie may have doue better. He was only <t nock behind Mercedo at the finish, with Jack Ashore fourth and Red, White, and Blue last. Sapience was tailed on the whole way. Thirteen started in the Trial Plate, a special weight race of four furlongs. The public supported Bon Soir strongly, and it certainly looked as if he would win. Ho has been racing aiuce October, when he started at tho A.J.C. meeting at Randwick, and was consequently more seasoned than most of the field, while, if he was good enough to start in a .£2OOO race at ltandwick, ho should bo good enough to back in a .£ls race at Oamqru. The start was not a good one, as Glenowl and Bon Soir went through the tapes several times and finally got the best of tho mov<soff. They were always.prominent, and Messrs. Stead's gelding won easily at the iinishr I'ougasso was a good third, lind it looked as if, with an even start,'she would have won.

Tho Wellington-owned Mount Victoria was made a short-priced favourite in the Landoiv Handicap, and with any luck ho would have ivon. Lupulito got the worst of tho start, and Kedwing tlio best. Mount Victoria was alongside her at the end of a furlong, but he ran. wide at the next turn, and thoso following all got up inside of him. Kilts also hung out bailly at this juncture. Within tho straight proper, Lupulite compounded, and Tenterhook took charge. Kilts and Mount Victoria put in good runs, and the former ivon by a length, while Mount Victoria dead-heated with Tenterhook for second place. The Cup proved a. boil-over, for the favourite, Dearest, was never prominent after six furlongs had been covered, and she finished very badly in fifth position. The start was a good one, Dearest im-mediately-rushing to the front, followed by Seraphic and True Knight. The favourite -was steadied after going two furlongs, and Seraphic took charge. With six furlongs to go, Seraphic was leading True Knight and Bollah, with the favourite and Tannhauser next. The West Coast, horse led into the straight, where ho compounded, and Bellah took charge, holding his own in the run up the hill. Tho lightweight, ridden right out, won by a couple of lengths, with Coroniform just clear of Mumura. Taanhauscr, Dearest, and Gold Coin wore the next to finish. There was a big field in the Railway Handicap, and several of' tho fop weights were evenly backed. Early Morn closed up a slightly letter favourite than Stepmaid, and they finished in the dividend paying places. Manillus 011 tho rails was tho quickest to begin, but at tho end of two furlongs lie was headed by .Stepmaid. Early Morn camo from 'a lons way back as they ran into the straight, but' though' she all the others sho could not reach Slepiuaid. Quota was at the head of the olliws, m!io were well bundled as they passed the post. Tho best hcrses were withdrawn from tho Welter, lea'ving the public in an uncertain mood concerning a favourite. Finally, Magdnla was settled upon, and he landed the stake with the second and third favourites in tho places. The start was a good one, Kilmeny and Magdala soon went to • tho front, and were not headed again. Gcniui came from a bug way uack, but'he was rocking badly at the finish, and would be better snited over a shorter course in his present condition. Russo, who carricd a lot of money, could not go with the field in the early part of the race, but he struggled ou well, and got into fourth position as they passed the post. The others were a long way back. Tho six acceptors all lined up at the barrier in tho final event of tho day. Palisado was favourite, with Blue Lake a.ud Pilgrim's Way evenly backed. The Hott mare drew >.0. 1 at the barrier, aad jumped out in front, but Paliaad?

kept her at it the whole way, and in the iiunl pinch up the hill ho went on hotter than tho marc, but in turn succumbed to Pilgrim's "Way. Kilts nlfo headed Blue Lake oil tho post. It was the finest finish of tho mooting, and the quartet montirmod could have been covered by a sheet. ACCEPTANCES FOE SECOND DAY. 07 Telecraph—Press Association.; Oamaru, Slay 23.
