FOOTBALL.

RUGBY'S RIVAL, THE ENTRY OF THE LEAGUE. DH.AXCn FORM Jin HERE. About 7f> footballers accepted the invitation of the Northern Football League, to attend a meeting in the Trades Hal! last evening, for tiie, purpose of forming a Provincial League in Wellinglon. Mi'! If. !!. Wright, of Potono, who presided, explained that the meeting had. been called because a gcod many people in Wellington considered that tile time had come to replace Rugby Union football bya better game. He moved:— "That, in the opinion of I his meeting, the time has now arrived to establish a Wellington Provincial Rugby Football League, to be ailiiiatcd to the New Zealand Kugby League." The League Organiser SpDaks. Sir. George Gilleit (League organiser), 111 seconding the motion, stated that ho had been sent down from Auckland for the purpose of sending the Northern Union game ahead. Everything possible would be done to assist the League in Wellington, financially and by advisory means. _ They hoped by obtaining grounds to provide siifiiciont inducement to players to take the game in hand. The game itself was a far better one for both plavcrs and for public than amateur Rugby. Tho "brutal boot" element that had uept into the Rugby game was entirely absent from the League game. (Applause.) The player was the first person to he considered in football, and the spectator was decidedly the second. Y cry little was being done at present to benefit the spectator or provide for his comfort. As little consideration was extended to the player. Some of tho best players whom 'New Zealand had sent on tour had been working men. Was it fair that they should have had to lose their wages while they wero hol<i» i«S MP an. end for New Zealand I' The Rugby Unions were amassing a great amount of money, but did nothing it for tiie benefit 01 the game or for the benefit of players. The way in which old players, who"had at one time played a distinguished part on the football field, and had later suffered misfortune, had been ncgicctcd, was a disgrace to the Union.

Another thin# to be considered was Hie deterioration uf Kugby, Nobody could say that the football of to-day "was as good as that of 1803 or 190 li. In conversation with a prominent ilugby Union official that morning, ho Jiad said, "What about the piayors and the public ?" I'lie official had replied: "D the public." The League game was far better for the player and for the public. The lingbv Union preferred to shut the gates on a ground and leave it empty rather than lot it to the League. This policy was due to an apprehension on the part of the Union that, if the League game wore given a fair and square chance, it would draw away soma of their supporters. "Will you allow tho Rugby Union to dictate to you what class of football you shall follow up?" asked Mr. Gillett, "If tho League game appeals to you, why should thev coerce you in any way?" finally, Mr. Gillett stated that' money would be forthcoming to keep the League game going in Wellington. ' The New Zealand League would provide local players with grounds and with every facility for carrying on the game as it should bo carried on, A "Cornstalk's" Opinion. Mr. T. O'Farrell ea id that'he w;as a life member of the League in New South Wales. Over there the league was dominant. It had all the grounds, all tho players, and all tho money, It was a bolter game from every point of view than Kugby. Mr. A. Kosser. of Auckland, described the progress of the Northern Union game in that town, ami predicted a successful career for it in Wellington. About the Money. A member of the audience asliod whether League members would !jo paid for playing in Saturday cup matches. .Mr. Gillett replied that it was very clearly laid down in the rules of the League that 110 man should receive any remuneration, for playing in his leisure time. No man drew anything, in. Auckland, for playing on Saturday afternoon. Any man who was building 011 earning enough to keep him in this game would make tho .greatest mistake of his life. While men wore away on tour they got the equivalent of the wages which they iost, and nothing more. The motion proposing the formation of tho League was earned unanimously. Getting Grounds. Called upon to report in regard to grounds, Mr. Gillett stated that he had encountered 110 difiic-ultv in obtaimn" the requisite playing areas. One grounif'tformerly used by St. Patrick's College) had been secured atDuppa Street, and another at I'etone. A second ground at l'etone and another at Lower llnti could be obtained if necessary. In addition to this ho had interviewed tho City iieserves Committee that day ami considered it possible that some of the big grounds might be available for important League St. lures this season. Officers Elected. On tho motion of .Mr. O'Farrell Mr llionms. seesiidijijf Mr. D. M'/.-aren (Major 0, UeiliiigtoiO was appointed president. Otner officers were' elected as follow: Vice-presidents Mewe \ M J Kcardottj U. K. Wright; 11. J. Pnimwi A. J. A.then, 1. M. Wdfard, M.J\, I). ]), Sulln an, 1 L. Ikrnes avtoue), W. Jorgenson. M. J. Milt l ' J :ila( ' iPr > Fraser (l'etone), M. J. Rcardon, and S. Bryce, J. Wray (Lower Iliitt). 1 Sketching a Programme. Tho cliainnai. stated that an earlv start would bo made upon eup mnldics, and that_ a series of representative matches would bo played in Wellington. Visiting teams would come from llnwke's liav, Noison, Wanganui, and Auckland. A match New Mouth Wales v. Wellington was also in prospect, and in all probability a match New South Wales v. New /ealaiiu would bo played in Wellington. A New Zealand team would tour Neir South ales before New South Wales came to New Zealand.

that a Xelson team would piay \\ ellington, at AYellington, 011 June 8. Wellington men, lie added, would be given preference over Auckland men showing equal l'orm by {lie selectors for the Now .South Wales team. 'Hie chairman said tliat one team had been _ formed at Peione, and th.ere was a certainty of forming another at Lower JliiM. At his invitation, Mr. W. Wilson agreed to form a tram in Wellington Contral and Mr. 13. King anotlier in Newtown. A vote r>f thanks was passed to Jfr.
