Mr. Bacchus, who has made many friends during ilia short slay here, will l)o much missed. Ho is a journalist- of note, and contributes largely to a number of English papers and magozincs. Miss M'Mahon, who for some months was a successful teacher of elocution ho-re, was recently married to Dr. Tcnnent, of Sydney. 'J/hey have left for Scotland. Same twenty members of the Church of England Men's Society were readmitted on Sunday evening, into tho society, in terms oi tho rides. Tho organisation is now m a nourishing condition. In Mr. Walter Best tho society aptsuwntly havo nu energetic secretary. , A meeting ot' tho committee of tho Horowhcnua Horticultural Society will bo hold next week, and. judging by tho report and balance-sheet to bo submitted, the memliers should bo well pleased with tho year's work. Although the society has been put to much c-xpcnse, and experienced bad weather for its last show, there is a credit balance in hand, while tho gross assets over liabilities amount to J6SI 9& Gd. Tho report indicates that tho society has held 27 shows. A lo?a lias been sustained by tho death of Mr. George Powell, nu onergetitf worker, while by tho death of Mr. A. E. JLi.vo a vacancy hard to fill had also resulted. Tho bowling season has concluded, and tho green has been top-dressed and put in readiness for next year. In order to celebrate a successful season, tho local club will hold a ball hero next month. Tho following hare boon elected a committee-,— Messrs. A want long felt has been remedied by Mi\ M'Cain, of this township, who has started an up-to-dato bakery; previously broad had to bo obtaine'd from ■ Wairoa. A butchery business is al» contemplated. Largo drafts of sheep may bo seen daily on route for tho Hastings sale next week. A remarkably fine lot from Kakariki Station is going forward, but stationiowners . aro rather handicapped, owing to ths want of a railway. Driving sheep 76 odd miles to a sale means both time and money, to «ty nothing of tho injury done to the animals. SHANNON. About twenty residents drove to Toknmarii on Friday night to l>o present at the Catholic "social" and dance. Mr. and Mrs. Norman, of Paiaka, are at present on a visit to Kotorua. On his return, Mr. Norman will tak-o ovor tho management of, Mr. C. C. Higginson's mill at. Koputarua. Messrs. H. aud E. Eastwood have disposed of'"their farm to Mr. James, of Otaki, who will lake possession at (ho beginning of Juno. Tha prico is said to bo iC2S -per acre.
