NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[BY Glencok.l The hunter Flamingo is now in work at l'almerston North, under the care of G. Caddy. The latter is spelling Matlow, and the only other active member of his tenm is a hunter by Papakura, from Dorothy. There will be racing at Oamaru and Wanganui to-morrow and Friday. Bronze and Ermengarde aro again in commission at Awapuni after a short spell.

J. Hathaway is leaving for Auckland in the course of a few days, and is taking witli him Leolanter and a. hunter by Tupulii. The pair were schooled on Monday morning, and both jumped well. J. H. Prosser will not b» ablo to . attend tho Wanganui meeting owing to Mrs. Prosser's serious illness. His of jumpers', Lovell and Torbelle, were railed to Wanganui yesterday under tho care of H. M'Swecney, who is to rido them in their engagements. The Highdeii youngsters are doing pottering work only during the absence of G. Price in Sydney. The best of tho lot is thought to be a filly by Charlemagne II from Turcdo. She is an almost idyllic racer to gaze upon, and is sure to coiuo to hand quickly. Awapuni track watchers aro selecting her to till Ermeiigardo's shoes. Those ivho have assisted to make Byron such a pronounced favourite for tho Connolly Handicap at Wanganui will not bo pleased to learn that he struck himself one morning last week, and was off the tracks for three days. During his retirement lie was given light physic, and he left for Wanganui yesterday. Ho may strip as well as ever, but a spell on tho eve of a meeting doea not tend to help a horse to get over oiiemile and a quarter successfully.

Yesterday afternoon T. Pritchard was removed from Hutt to a private hospital in tho city. It has been found necessary to robreak and reset tho injured leg. Dr. M'Gavin is to undertake tho operation this morning. • At Awapuni T. Wilson has jut into work his Maniapoto—Serf gelding but Lady Georgia is being allowed to cat tho oats' of idleness. Oakum aud Neirene, two maiden two-year-olds in tho Highden stables, are being kept busy on tho tracks, and will no doubt bo seen out in tho Trial Plato at 'i'rentham in July. Tho Masterton sportsman, Mr. F. Dorset, will be represented at tho Ellerslie meeting next month by Sir Solo, who went through to Auckland yesterday iu charge of Garrett. B. Deelcy has been offered tho mount on the Sir Laddo geiiting, but tho Auckland jockey will probably be riding at the Otaki meeting, and, therefore, lx> unable to accept. ' Deeley reached Wanganui from Ellerslie yesterday afternoon. His only mount on the first day will be Leonta, in the Purua Hack Race. He was to have ridden Mulga Bill in the Connolly Handicap, but declined, in order to rido Dearest, who lias since been withdrawn, and seul' south to compete in tho Oamaru Cup. C. Emerson, who went through from Porirua to Wanganui yesterday, was also to have had tho mount on Mulga Bill in the Connolly Handicap (tho horse has been scratched), and will also ride Merrv Frank in the Borough Handicap, and Kiwitahi in the Purua Hack event.

■ While speaking of Mulga Bill it is interesting to noto that Deeley has won on every occasion that he has ridden the Merriwee gelding, and ho has a similar record with tho Auckland pony Jack Dclaval.

Zante, who had been getting tlirough useful schooling work at New Plymouth, and who was considered to have more than a rough chance in the Wat\janui Steeple?, sustained injury through contact with a wire fence last week, and will not, it is understood, accompany the other mcmbei9 of A. Rhodcs's team to Wanganui. Another New Plymouth 'chaser, in the shape of Pleiades, has been doing all that lias been asked of him in good s-.yle, ojid it will be in his favour that ho is more seasoned than tho majority of the that will oppose him. F. Howard is to have tho mount on the half-brother to Hnydn.

Golden Loop has recently been under offer to a Melbourne owner, but, so far, no deal has resulted, and the Lupin g"' 1 " ing will probably be running in his present owner's colours in the Hack Hurdle Race on the second day of the A\ nflgaiiui meeting. Should he be a starter, he win bo ridden by W. J. Porter.

Antarctic, who will carry No. cloth in the big cross-country event at Wanganui to-morrow, has hr-en doing capitfil work at Ellerslie recently, and has continued to go on satisfactorily since reaching W anganui, but the fact that he has not had a race for a considerable (fine ivnt he against such a free goer. However. Percival, who is to have the mov>nt on tho Salvadan gelding, is o strong lockey, and is likely to do full justico to Antarctic. R. Thompson wilt ride Sir Lethe sn the Wanganui Strenles, M'Fl.vnn wnl rute T,ovell. and W. Adams will bo up on Glenmore.

Although Penman's name anpears nmnns the nccepfors for l>ntli the TT.'h'l; and the Century Hurdles it "= definitely stated that, his mi«inn is the latter. 15. ITnrtnsh will ride Eurooo in Hie Century Hurdles. So far. Byron ha= not been scratched for the Connolly Handicap, aw., for ' 1,0 present, (here docs not anpear to bp much truth in the rumour that all was not wcl. with him. ~ C. Price, who had been engaged to vulo both Maknrn and Byron, reached Wnneamii lo fulfil his engagements yesterday. J. Stewart arrived froiii_ Melbourne Inst "Wednosdav, '.'rid spending a couple of weeks' holiday with his relatives in \\ nlieiinui.
