6 . ■ OPIUM-SMOKING IN PALMEKSTO^V IBy Telegraph.—Saecial Correspondent.) Palmerstori North, May 21. The police made a raid last ofi| the promises in Main Street, occupied by a Chinaman named William Tie, under the suspicion that lie had opium iu his !>o?SK'sioii and was smoking. There were i.ivo other inmates of the house, and they were anything but pleased at the official visit. After a careful search the police, under Sergeant 'Willis, unearthed several half-tins of opium and several utensils for the consumption of tho drug. The Chinaman Tie was arrested, but v.-as Admitted to ltaii. To-day he was brought before the Magistrate's Court, and, in extenuation cf tho offence, said ho was so long used to the drug that ha could not do without it. He was fined £10 for having the opium in his possession, and ,£2 for smoking it. This is the second timo Tie's premises have been raided. Tho iirst time tho notice found opium in tho mattresses of tiio beds.
