At the Opera House this evening at 8 o'clock the curtain will rise on the initial Wellington production of "livorywonian." The Opera House \va.s closed las.t. night for the purpose of holding a scenery ami lighting rehearsal, which was undertaken successfully. To-night will be a notable occasion in local theatrical history, as in addition to the presentation of a new play, it will also signalise the reappearance here of Miss Hilda Spong, who has, judging by reports, materialised the early promise which she gave of proving one of (he best actresses on the Australasian stage. The management state that, in America, she is bracketed with Miss .Maud Adams,' Julia Marlowe, Margaret Anglin, and Knthcrine Grey. Miss Spong, it is said, possesses that rare magnetism which is essential to an actress before she can bo declared "groat." And she is said to bo particularly fine in the big dramatic climax in "the third act. As Nobody, Mr. William Desmond will appear in a part totally different from any in which he has previously been seen in Wellington, and one that presents him, it is said, at his best. Messrs. George Miller (Bluff), and Robert Whvte (Stuff) will make theiT debut hero. Miss Enid Bennett, as Modesty, has won her way into the hearts of New Zealand plorgoers by her natural acting, and Misses Elsie Clarens (Youth) and Miss Dorothy Cumming (Beauty.) are also well spoken of. Mr. A. 3. Patrick, as King T.ove, gives further evidence of his dramatic capacity, and Mr. Herbert J.eigh is said In be excellent- as Wealth. A feature of the production is tho incidental music which will be, performed by | n full operatic orchestra tinder the direction of Mr. Fred. Ouintrell. Mr. Lionel Wnlshe is stage manager, and Mr. Tfiehard Stewart business 'manager. Only six representations of "Even-woman" are billed, as, on Tuesday next, and two fol-low-'ng nigh''!. Haddrm Chambers's cmn-cdv-dromn "Pn«scr«-By" will be staged. Seats in central position can he selected at the Dresden, and tickets for the earlv door stalls and early door gallery can be purchased at Christesen's.
