ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES .
LABOTTHKR. KILLED AT WOKK. An accident which occurred on Glasgow Wharf .yesterday morning,' resulted in the death of Air. Charles Thorpe, a, wharf labourer. At the time of the mishap deceased was engaged in assisting to load flax on to the steamer Surrey, lie had hooked three bales of flax to the sling of the crane, and the order had been given to the cranedriver to haul up. The driver (William Donovan) raised the sling, anil just as he did so Thorpe stepped between the sling and the door of the shed, apparently for the purpose of putting a coil of rope inside the shed. The sling swung towards him, and crushed him against the shed. lie was killed instantly.
Deceased was not married. He resided at Gi Taranafci Street. hi April, 11)11, lie unsuccessfully contested the City Council election. An inquest will ho held DEATH OP A CHILD. - An inquest was held yesterday fit. tho morgue before Mr. Kiddeil concerning the death of a. male infant, the son of Mrs. Kingan, who died last Saturday morning about 9 o'clock. The mother, in the course of her eiridciiee, stated that the child was born at Hie Alexandra Nursing Home on.April 29, and had'never beeti'lr particularly robust child.'; lii course of time it became weaker.' and she confided it to the care of a nurse, Mrs. Hornig, who lived at Upper Halt.. Sirs. Hornig slated that she had taken the child, and, seeing that ib was not well, took it to Dr. Kemp, who advised that she should return it to the mother. This she did the next day, and the mother immediately had the child taken to Dr. Agnes Bennett, who prescribed. During the same night the mother sat up with the child, but, before Dr. Bennett arrived in the -morning, it died. • Dr. I?ylTe, who conducted the postmortem, .stated that the body was extremely emaciated, and weighed just four pounds-. He considered that death was due to gastroenteritis, either from -improper feeding or starvation. The coroner said that, after hearing the evidence of the mother and 'Mrs. Hornig, and taking into account the decisive evidence of Dr. Fyffc, lie could only say that death was the result of gastroenteritis, caused by improper feeding.
A SEAMAN MISSING. ' -■-■- (By Telesraph.—Press Association.! Auckland, May 20. Tile /'.Herald's" Kawhia correspondent states that a seaman named Mays, belonging to the scow Ngaru, took the ship's boat on Sunday to go fishing at the Heads. The boat was seen outside the Heads in the nl'ternqon, but nothing has been seen or heard of it since. Some wreckage was found on the beach towards Aotoa to-day, and. it is feared that the boat must have capsized in the breakers. Search parties are out. A WAGONER KILLED. Ounedin, May 20. Joseph Ellis, aged thirty-five years, a single man, employed as a wagoner, died in the Lawrence Hospital this morning as the result of injuries sustained through his falling under his wagon at Miller's Flat on Saturday.
NATIVE LAD DROWNED. Auckland, May 20. The "Herald's" Parenga correspondent reports a sad drowning accident. Five Natives were out in a boat fishing, when a big breaker capsized the craft. Three of the Natives were only poor swimmers, and, in spite of the efforts of their companions to- save them, one lad, named John Cash, was drowned in sight of his friends. The others got ashore with great difficulty. DEATH IN A BATH. An inquest was held yesterday before Mr Kiddell, S.M., concerning the death of Arthur Audrey, who was found dead in his bath about 9 o'clock hist Saturday evening. Dr. M'Evcdy, in the course of evidence, stated that death was due to heart failure. The finding of tho coroner was in accordance with the medical evidence. Word was received in Wanganui yesterday afternoon, telegraphs our special correspondent, of the drowning on Saturday of Miss Gilligiin, the eighteen-year-old daughter of Mr. E. Gilligan, a well-known Waitntara settler. A farm labourer, 20 years of age, named Hans Wahren. was taken to the hospital yesterday afternoon, having met with an accv.dcnt'iit Orongorongo. One of his legs was broken.
