ACID EXPLOSION.
LUMPERS FRIGHTFULLY BURNED. Br Telegraph—Press AssociaXion-Copyrieht. Sydney, May 18. An iron drum containing ten hundred weight of sulphuric acid exploded on a wharf at Newcastle, splashing the contents over five men who were working in the vicinity. Grainger, a labourer, received the full force of the acid on the face and body. 1 Smith, another labourer, was also frightfully burned. The others were splashed on their arms and faces. The injured men screamed and writhed with the excruciating pain. Smith plunged into the harbour.
Wherever the acid had touched the men's clothing it fell to pieces.
The injured men were conveyed to the hospital.
Braithwaite and Smith are in a critical state; the injuries of the others are not likely to end seriously. .
