Earl Grey said that besides desiring to teach tho Motherland of tho resources of the overseas dominions, the Institute might also teach the overseas dominions of the greatness of tho Motherland, .and prove to them that the spirit of Britain is not played out yet. lie knew thousands in Canada who envied Mother Ireland's privilege of' bearing the burden of Empire, and counting the day when they would be able to claim a share.

Sir Arthur Lawiey, replying to the overseas toast, asked, "Wero the people of Great Britain to bear tho whole burden of tho Navy, or were they to share it with their overseas brethren." On the happy solution of this problem depended tho future welfare and existence of the Empire.

Ottawa, May 18. Mr. W. T, White, Minister of Finance, speaking at Toronto, snid it was necessary for the five nations of fhe Empire to get together for the purposes of defence. Tho federation of the Empire at tho present time did not present any difficulty. Canada was destined to become the Empire's heart in the future.
