Eugene Victor Debs was born at Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1855. ne was a locomotive fireman on Hie Terre Hanto and Indianopolis R.R., IS7I-1; iu a wholesale grocery house, 1875-9; city clerk of Terro Haute, 1879-83; member of tho Indiana Legislature, 1885; president of tho American Railway Union, 1893-7; chairman of the National Council Social Democracy, 1897-8; Social Democratic candidate for President, 1900; candidate for Socialist party in 1904 and 1908. He managed two big strikes of railroad men.
