SHORTAGE OF CARGO SPACE.
STATEMENT BY HON. T. BUXTON'. (By Telegraph.—Spccial Correspondent.) Christchurch, May 17. Asked <\s to the shortago of cargo space, on homeward-bound vessels, the ITon. T. Buxton, Minister without portfolio, said that ho had spoken to a number of shipping men, and they had agreed that there was a shortage of space. A 11 umbra' of the companies had been looking into tlie matter, and had assured him that a considerable amount of space would he available in .Tune and July, sufficient, they declared, to cope with" all the cargo that was offering. Cargo had been leaving Lyttelton freely during the past few weeks, -,-ind the Karamea this week had taken 6000 hags of grain from Tiraoru. Mr. Buxton added that lie had not intended any cf his previous remarks to apply to the intercolonial trade; they had bean made touching the English and European trade only. He had received word that a "tramp" would be visiting New Zealand probably early in June, and would carry awav about liO.OOO bag? nf grain. The shipping companies since the matter had been pointed out appeared t« have beeu most eager, and had done their best to meet the situation.
