RAILWAY MONEY VANISHES.
SUM OF JC3OO MIBSINQ FROM GUARD'S VAN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, May 17. A daring theft has been reported to llio railway authoiilii'S in Auckland, Jt'lfJO having been stolen from a train which wns travelling towards Auckland, between Ohnlnino awl Taiimarunui. Particulars are very meagre, but, upon in- j f|uiry being made, it was ascertained that the ' '.(liiey had simply disappeared. It is customary for tho money to l>o Bt'lil from intermediate stations between Ohakune and Tnumartinui to the bitter place for banking ntirjioscs. On Tuoiday last JSHJO, representing railway revenuo from one of tho statioiui, wa<! being sent to Taumarunui by ano of tho mixed goods train s . Tho sum made up of cash and cholines, and was enclosed ill a regulation cosh-box, ' being placed in the guard's van under the guard's care. Presumably it was placed by the jjuavd under lock and key, sinco his duties on the train made it obviously impossible for him to remain in tho van all tho time and Keep guard over it. From the small amount of detailed information available, it would seem that tho low o? the money was not noticed until Taumarunui was reached, and that there was not the slightest trace available as to when, where, or how, it had disappeared. The whole thing is completely shrouded in mystery, and tho police and railway authorities are busy endeavouring to unravel tho affair. Tho payment of tho cheques contained in tho crush-box has been stopped, but the amount of cash nlono represents a considerable haul.
