DANGERS OF THE SQUARE,

Palmerston, liny 17, As tho Prime Minister passed through PaUnorston this. afternoon by. tho Napier express to Wellington, tho Mayor, accompanied by '.Councillors Clausen and Seiteri, saw'hini about a request made to thoRailway Department, for. the installation of electric alarm bells, at. the dangerous crossings in the Square and at Cook Street. The Mayor pointed out that several bad' accident's had. already happened; and as the railway-and read traffic incressjil the danger became intensified. ' Tho .Jat.o Minister for Railways (Mr.. Millar) had promised that bells would bo installed, and the Borough Council..was anxious 'that this promise should be fulfilled as oarly as possible. Ho apologised for troubling tho Prime Minister on tho matter, as ho knew that tho Minister for Railways was the right person to go to, but that gentleman was away down south. Tho matter was so pressing that they had come io the Prime Minister on tho first opportunity. Mr.' Mackenzie said that ho appreciated tho danger, as ho know tho crossing referred to, and would bring tho matter before the Minister for Railways at tho first opportunity. Mr. "J. Lomas, chief inspector of the Labour Department, accompanied by Mr. J. Robertson, M.P., and Mr. R. li. Dnlhousio (president of tho Fiaxinill Workers' Union), has just completed a tour of inspection of the flnxraills, which was authorised by the Minister for Labour.
The Palmerston Orchestral Society will give its first concert of the present season at tho end of this month. The vocalists will bo Mrs. Basham, an Elthain contralto, and Mr. J. Carter, of Palmerston. Mr, C. G. Swallow, of Auckland, will contribute a flute solo.
Mrs. 11. Mowlera, who ha 3 resigned the presidency of the local branch of the WICI.T.U!, owing to leaving for Melbourne, was entertained at a farewell social this afternoon by members of' the union.
Tho committee of the Manawahl Hunt met last night, Mr. S. R. Lancaster (president) in tho cliair. Sixteen now members were elected. A sub-committee was sot up to fix ft date for the annual steeplechase meeting, and it was decided to hold the annual ball on tho night of tho day on which the steeplechase meeting is held. A sum of ten guineas was subscribed in the room towards tho prises for the qualified hunter jumping competition at tho spring show of tho Manav.-atu A. and P. Association.
