ADVERTISING ON THE CARS.
SCHEME FALLS THROUGH.
The contract for advertising on the city tramway cars, which created so much, discussion when first proposed about a year ago, has had but a brief duration, and has now been terminated at the request of the contractors. At last night's meeting of the City Council the Tramways Commitfee reported; "That ihey have fully considered the application of Messrs. Lucas Browne ami Co. So be relieved of their contract for advertising in tramcars, and aro of opinion that in tho settlement of this matter the wnole of, tho commission to which tho firm is entitled must be based on the first year's receipts. On this basis, the full commission payable amounts to .£l6O. Of this sum A'B7 16s. 2d. has been paid, leaving a balance of £12 3s. 10(1. There aro, however, two advertisements on which Messrs. Lucas Browne and Co. claim commission, and the committee, although ihey are of opinion tliat the council is not legally liable, consider that somo payment might bo made, and recommend that ~£4O be allowed (based on the first year's receipts), bringing the total amount payable up to .£ll2'3s. lOd. The committee recommend that the council agr.eo to terminate tho contract on tho above terms."
The council adopted the recommendation.
