WANGANUI NOTES.
THE CHOPS AND THE STOCK. Although the ordinary noxious weeds are not very.much-in evidence about Wanganni, says oiir travelling correspondent, there is far too much pennyroyal. Some -farmers have tried salt with varying results, but unless the land con bo ploughed and. well worked, it seems to be a difficult weed to , get. rid of. ■ Calling one- day on Mr. N. Sutherland at "Lamb Hill," he showed mo some.paspalum growing luxuriantly. He told mo it gave' u, lot of feed, and all stock like it, but he snifi it would be unwiso to sow' it on agricultural land. The roots are strong, and become so matted that it would be difficult to plough. • Across the road is I'Broo.kdale," Mr. Baker's property, now being farmed by his manager, Mr. 'Skevlrt'gton. • Here I saw some fino Border Leicester sheep, members of this llock having -been very successful at the Svdiiey show and Dominion shows last vear I saw some rams which wore over' to Sydnev-as good sheep n? anyone could desire. They are not pretty sheep, at least to my eye, but their lambs from crossbred eVes mature quickly, and them are not so many culls left over as with somo other breeds. ■ ..; i •V"ootl deal of crop is usually grown in' tho Tordell and Warrongarc districts. When I was here the only crop was averaging a httlo over twenty tons to the acre. The variety was principally Dakota Ked, an excellent potato or good, flavour and a great lesister of blisthl. Other gwwers whom I visited, and who were-growing white varieties al complained of the havoc winch blight had made in their crops this year. The lni-ger potato-grower.? aro now going in lor potato diners In fairly clean land they do very eootl work, but 'where it is very .weedy or wet tho machine becomes clogged; •
