After a sharp fusillade, Vuillemin, one of tho women, emerged and surrendered.
More shots tlson followed, from the villa and Detective Fleury was shot in tho stomach and two other officers were less seriously hurt.
From the railway viaduct stones were hurled and crushed into the roof; several bombs were, exploded against the building ineffectually. Meanwhile, Zouaves, from various points round the house, kept up a hot fire, the bandits replying. Tlio buttle lasted seven hours when a melinite bomb exploded the house which was carried by assault.
Hie police removed Garnier, who was dead, and Vnllot died on the way to Paris.
Two thousand troops were engaged. The fate of the second woman is not recorded.
