A Press Association message from Dunedin states that Mnjor-General Godley had the misfortune to meet with a slight accident while inspecting the Twelfth Otago Mounted Rifles at Balclutha to-day, his horse falling and rolling on his foot, tho General straining his ankle. He came on to Dunedin by the evening express, and as he is confined to bis room, his. departure will )>e delayed for a dny or so.
The Hon. C. Johnston, accompanied by his son, motored through to Castiecliff to visit' Mr. Lan Johnston, who has been ll! for some- time, but who is now progressing favourably.

Mr. ChaTles Seabrook, one of the oldest residents of Grey mouth, died yesterday morning, after a long illness, states a Press Association telegram.

Mr. G. V. F. Mann, director of the National Art Gallery of Sw South Wales, was a passenger from Sydney py tlio Moeraki yesterday. He conies to Wellington to inspect tho Baillio collection of British paintings and to recommend thc?o canvases which ho fancies it will Uβ in tho interest of the trustees of his gallery to secure. With Dr. Du Faur, Mr. Mann visited Christ church in 1906 to select pictures from the British collection at the New Zealand Exhibition.
Mr.- Frank S. Ta.it, who is arranging (he lecture tour of Lieutenant-General Baden Powell, the originator of the Boy Scout movement is at present in Wellington.
Tho death is announced of Mr. G. A, L. Pauling, district land reijisirar at Invercargill, who had been in a precarious state of health for somo tinio past. The ciuiso of death is said to have been heart failure, accentuated by an attack of pneumonia. Tho deceased entered tho Government Service nt Wellington ,10 rears ago when he was appointed to the Lands and Deeds Office. He remained in tho Wellington office for fourteen years, during which time he was once a representative Engby footballer. Later he went to N«pior, and was transferred to Invercargill about twelve months ago. The lafp Mr. Patiling, who was forty-seven yenrs of ngc at the time of his death, ienves a widow, but no family.—l'ress Association.
Mr. Geoffrey TTorton who has been away from New Zcataml for the la?t twelve years, mniiaging mines in arrived' in Wellington yesterday by tho Arawa, and intends leaving, on Saturday for Blenheim whore his people live. Mr. Ifortou lias only six months' leave of absence and after spending about six weeks iii New Zealand, leaves for British Columbia and England, before finally returning to Rhodesia.
Mr. Duncan M'Gregor, the troll-known "All Black" footballer, returned from England by the Arawa yesterday, after an absence- of four years in the Old Country.
