CIVIC ELECTIONS.
MR. THEGEAK AT KILBIEKIB. Mr. E. Tregear addressed n large meeting of electors at O'Donnell's Hall, Kilbirnie, Inst evening. Sir. Wagstaff presided. Supplementing his previous utterances on the subject of municipal markets, Mr. Trcgear stated that a Hutt grower had produced "account sales" showing that lie had received only 6d. per tack, less commission, lor cauliflowers sent to the local market. Retail prices for the same articles, were quite, out of proportion to suck a low initial cost. The problem of the cost of living, Mt. Tregear contended, would largely b» solved by eliminating the middleman, and establishing public markets. This would not lake money out of the pockets of the people, but would have a reverse effect, as was shown by the experience of a number of cities in the Old Country and in Australia. Mr. Tregear also advocated (he establishment of a municipal hotwater supply. This, he claimed, would bring about a great saving in the cost of fuel. Addresses in support of Mr. Tregear's candidature were delivered by Messrs. A. Withy and W. S. Bedford. A vote of thanks to, and confidence in, the candidate was carried unanimously.
