TETHERED BIRDS.
« • 1 A "BLERIOT" AND "SCHAEP NO. 2." At the Colonial Motor (Ford) Garage, in Courtc-nay Plate, Mr. Schaef, of Wclr lingtou, has on exhibition a Hying' machine of his own design, which is to bo fitted with a new 35-h.p. French motor ond propeller, expected to arrive in about six weeks' time. The machine is expecteii to givo a good account of itself, and reflects infinite credit on the maker's me- ! chanical ingenuity. Whilst making a stronger ond better balanced monoplane than that which he previously experii mented with, Mi'. Schaef has actually 5 eliminated llMb. weight, and he antici- ! pates that his machine will be able to 1 11 v with the best of tliem. Schaef No. 2, ' which has been christened "Vogel," has the two main pianos, one on each side of . the driver, the horizontal tail plane, vcr- . tieal rudder, and right in front, beneath . the motor, a small piano which acts in - harmony with the tail-plane, ami is said to add security in volplaning. The bodj; - of the machine is merely n framework of f ash, with uprights of spruce, and the main standards or uprights, by which the chassis is attached to the body, are of ' spruce, with laterals of ash. An ingenious idea is embodied in the chassis to ' provide for landing on uneven ground or i from toppling over after having touched ground. Mr. Schaef has adjusted wheels f on the oblique, in such a manner that the top of each wheel inclines inwnrus • and the bottom outwards, thus giving a safer "spread" to the chassis, the motor will be placed right forward on the body, and fully two yards away from the driver, who is comfortably seated in a leatherscaled chair. The body is neatly crossstayed with strong wire, and the planes are wired to the body in a most ingenious manner. In appearance the schaef > No 2 looks even more iragilo than llie ■ "Bievint" behind it. but yesterday ft yr- ■> noon Mr. Schaef (who weighs 9st. 101»., > and a fourtoen-stone pressman' jumped 1 about on the body at the one time, am it appeared that double the weight would : not affect it. The plane control is prae--1 ticallv that of the Bleriot. Where it dif--4 fers from .the imporlied machine is mains iv in the shape of the planes and conr si-ruction of the chassis. Ihc big side planes of the new Schaef nro mclinod lo mint at the tips more than those or the e Bleriot. and-1110.tail planes are narrower 5 a ' 1 sh' and Veshnren's Bleriot, ■ damaged on the journey from America, is '1 also on view at the Ford Oarage. I.lns ' is eomnlcte with a M-h.p. Roberts motoi, 0 and a fine propeller ot straight ash, hiJ. ; appears to be nnlv awaiting a tomb o J lush the air mid lift the silver bml'-rtly s skyward. The public are liiyi.ed fieo : of' charge to view the tethered buds .n 1 the Ford Garage, in Gonrtennj rh.ee.
