4 HOW THE CHIEF BAKER WAS SAVEDA MIRACULOUS ESCAPE. By Teleiranh—Press Association— Copyright. (Rec. May 12, 5.5 p.m.) London, May 11. The inquiry into the loss of the Titanic was continued to-day before Lord Mersey and tho Board, of Assessors. Jonathan, chief baker on tho Titanic, gave evidence that prior to the sinking of the bliip he threw fifty deck choirs overboard. He then went to tho pantry and drank salf a tumbler of 'liqueur when suddenly, with a crash, the ship buckled. The people on board scurried to get to the poop. The ship gave a lurch and everyone pitched down nnd fell in a mass. Hundreds lay piled on each other. The witness managed to clutch a rail. When the Titanic plunged he found himself in the water, safely with his belt still on. He paddled about for two hours. At daybreak he reached the collapsible boat, in which the second officer, Mr. Lightoller, and twenty-five men were standing. There was no room. Jonathan was pushed away. He swam round to the opposite side of the boat, when Mnynard, one of the cooks, recognised him and supported him until the life-boat rescued the party. MR. ISMAY IN ENGLAND. LOUDLY CHEERED ON ARRIVAL. (Rec. May 12, 5.5 p.m.) ■ London, May 11. Mr. J. Bruce Ismay, mannging director of the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, proprietors of the White Star Line, who was rescued from the Titanic, has arrived in Livorpool. A large assemblage loudly cheered him when he disembarked. .
