GIVEN AT FAIIUIE. fßj Tolerranli.-l'ros» A»«ocIutlo».' Timaru, Slay 12. About 150 person.?, including soma ladies, attended a "social" to the Hon. T. Buxlon at K.iirlie on Friday evening. The Premier was present, having motored from Palmerslon South. llr. F. li. Uillingham, chairman of iiio County Coim* cil and South laiilerbury Hospital Board, presided. Both Ministers htul a most catdial reception, and the meeting was enthusiastic (hroughoiit. Tho chairman presented Mr. Buxton with an illuminated address of atfurWia(ion as a member, and congratulation us Minister, and, in his remarks, praised Mr. Buxton highly for his attention to local affairs in the past. Ho believed that he woidd prove a capable Minister. Ucfrrouce was made to tho recent prowess of tho Fairlie district through tho closer settlement policy, and, in his reply, Jfr. Buxton said that he was trying to get other local large estates dealt with. The chairman spoke of the l/ocnl Government Bill, and condemned it roundly, its centralising principle boing, h* thought, a great mistake. The Hon. T. Mackenzie, in his reply, said that a Bill had long ten asked for, and local bodies were being asked to fay what sort of Bill they wanted. Speaking of agriculture, the Premier said that tho Government were importing another first, class dairy instructor, and also a dairying chemist to instruct pooplo how (o mak* the best of tho by-products.
