Mao« kenzae) arrived in Christchurch last night from tho south. ~ Speakiiw of lu's southern lour ho said that it had been a fairly extensive one, ami the impression which it had left on him was that tho feeling of the country was favourable to the Government pariy. Mr. Mackenzie made a brief refercne* to a Dunedin message which to him a statement that, when tho poss(ion of Prime Minister was vacant, he jumped into tho breach He said that t U hardly worth while correcting lh« mistake, but as the matter had been commented on he might just as we! sta.« what had occurred. Someone had staled at a meeting of tho Gaelic Society that the political position ,was a difficult one. and he. had replied that tho party ad selected him to defend .tho breach, and l,n would do his utmost m that direction,
