SERIOUS RAILWAY SMASH.

A railwnv accident of a rather serious nature occurred at the Bluff last evenin? when a passenger train from lnvercargill collided with a goods (Tain waiting ou a siding about 100 yards from (ho Bluff Railway Station. The accident occurred through soino as yet undiscovered, placing a stone in the points. Tho passenger train, which loft town at 5.10, was a fully-laden one, and, had it not been Tor the automatic application of the Westiiighouse brake, a serious disaster may have occurred. ■ As it was the train ran on to the siding, ami collided violently with a shuntin"- engine which was standing on the rails connected with a long lino of trucks. The second-to-last passenger car, however, jumped the points. Revering the airbrake connection, and this automatically stopped tho train, „.,,,. w The impact was sufficient ro throw fireman Harry Bastor violently from the cab of tho passenger train engine on to the tender, and ho received several nasty injuries, including a broken nose and a severely cut head. His condition to-night was, however, reported asMiot very seri-i wis. There will be an exhaustive inquiry into the circumstances of the accident.
