SUGAR IN AUSTRALIA.

A JAM MANUFACTURER'S VIEWS. By Telegraph— Press Association-Copyright Sydney, May 9. Mr. Peacock, the jam manufacturer, publishes a statement which has been handed to the Sugar Commission, but which was not allowed to be read, covering the position of the manufacturers and fruitgrowers with regard to tho industry. He claims that the solution of the whole sugar difficulty lies in tho direction of no import or excise duties on white-grown t sugars, with a direct bonus paid to cane growers. The result would bo that, as in New Zealand, sugar would be sold in Australia at the world's prices. IF THE SUGAR DUTY IS REMOVED. (Rec. May 9, 9.10 p.m.) Sydney, May 9. At the sitting of the Sugar Commission to-day Mr. W. H. Barnes, Treasurer of Queensland, stated' that tho removal of the duty on sugar would cause the industry to eventually die and the lands to become unoccupied. They would thus invite invasion, by nations with whom they were now at peace.
