His Excellency the Governor will give an official full-dress dinner on the evening of June 3 to commemorate 'he King's birthday. The function will be similar to the dinner given last year to celebrate (lie Coronation. His Excellency left for Auckland yesterday, and will return to Wellington about the. thirtieth of this month. The only Cabinet Minister at present in town is the Hon. G. W. Russell. The Prime Minister (the Hon. T. Mackenzie) and the Jloii. J. A. Hanan are in Southland, the Hon. W. D. S. Macdonald mid the Hon. G. Laurenson in Taraimki, the Hon. A. 11. Mvers and the Hon. 11. G. 1011 at Christchurch, the Hon. J. Colvin at Thames, the Hon. To Rangihiroa at Wanganui, and tho Hon. T. Huston at, Tcinukn. Tho Hon. W. D. S. Macdonald will pro- j bably return from Tarauaki to-morrow. The Hon. J. Colvin intends to Tisib Auckland before returning from the nor! I). Lieutenant 0. B. Dobbs, of the Gth (Muimwntiu Mounted llilles, has resigned his commission. The licensing of the following persons as surveyors, is notified in the Gazette:— Messrs. William David Armit (Kelson), Valentino Blake (Wellington); Arthur Campbell Cooke (Nelson), Frank Lewis Davis (Christchurch), John Kirwood Ledger (Auckland), Francis Alfred Stevens'(Hamilton), William Brian do Laval Willis (Auckland). Captain Eckford, who is interested in tho trawling industry in Wellington, leaves for Sydney to-morrow evening by the Ulimaroa. The following persons are gazetted as members of the Assessment Court for the districts indicated:—Messrs, L. P. Beecroft (Rodney County); G. L. Peacock '.New Lvnn Town District); T. E. Crosse (Napier" South Town District and Pntangata County); D. J. Cameron (Eketahiina Borough); E. A. Campbell (New Plymouth Borough and Stratford Borough); 11, ' Macaulay (Geraldme Borough and Geraidine County); \J. Harrison (Ashburton County); R. H. Parish, sen. (Oxford County); P. R. Elhaghani (Mackenzie County). Mr T. W. Pilcher and Mrs. Pilcher leave bv the Ulimaroa this afternoon on a holiday trip to Sydney. The Gazette intimates that Mr. J. H. Knowlos has been appointed an inspector of machinery. Mr. W. P. Ration has been appointed clerk of the Magistrate's Court at Lower Hutt, as'from May 1, in succession to Constable J. M'Kcnzie. Mr. W. S. Jones has been appointed clerk of the Supreme and Magistrate's Courts at Wanganui. The Gazette notifies that Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., has been appointed chairman of tho Licensing Committees for the districts of Wellington, Hutt, and Wellington Suburbs and Country District, on and from May 0, vice Dr. M'Arthur, S.M. The Gazette notifies the appointment, of Mr. J. Strauchon as Under-Secretary for Immigration, and of Mr. V. T. O'Neill as Assistant-l'nder-Sccretnry for Immigration. The funeral of tho late Mr. H. S. Wardell took place at Masterton yesterday. The New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts was represented by Mr. It. H. Bectham, an old member of tho academy, and son of Mr. Wm. Bectham, tho first president of the Wellington Society of Arts. Thcro was a large and representative attendance. An impressive incident was the presence of so many natives of tho district. Mrs. Kinewah, on behalf of tho assembled natives, spoke at the gravesido as follows: "My father, our now departed fattier, you have been our chief, our father, and our friend. Go now! We let you go to a better sphere where perhaps you will feel no pain. Go, go! Our love will remain here for you."
