Havvera, May 8, The Egniont winter meeting opcncil to day in line but cold weal her. The lit tendance whs up (o average and the pro gi'iiminc of seven events was run througl by 4.10 p.m., tluis enabling visitors t; ratch the excursion trains which left foi New Plymouth and Wanganiti. The lieldi were good, but there was (in uiicomfort ably large percentage of horses out foi practice onlv. . Matters began badly for backers when t "hot. order ,- —Dogger Bank—was dcicatet in the Hurdles. His downfall was coin passed by To. Waharoa, who began wit! him, and kept him at it the- whole way At the. six furlongs ho was lieadcd hj .Si'niiiiin, but the rider of the laftei adopted strnngu tactics and, at tilt liall-mile. Stiver Clii-e ran past him AYlien well into the straight, Seaman wahustled aloiij!. a* was Cornelian, and thej finished in Hint order, with the favourite fourth. A feature of the race was the lack t>l earnestness on (hi , iwrt of several of the riders, Pron. every point of view the Seurrj was a disappointing race, oven though nineteen runners faced the starter. 'Chi hi? field was late in qoim- to (he barrier, and Hip. result was Hint a large sum was shut out. of (ho machine. Piriwai oner again caused a Ion? delay the barrier, and when the start was made she whipped round, ami bole no part in the race. Park Tide and Galtce soon draw out from th« field, and with half a mile covered thuy were together in front, the remainder beiii? struncr out over a furlong. Galtec disposed of Park Tide very easily in the ran home, and Gordon Bell, who was slow to find his feet, also came on, am! beat, the favourite. Taken as a whole, the field comprised some of the poorest horses racing in the North Island. Simple Sam, Katua. and Draft were evenly backed in Hie Railway Handicap, and ' the last-named just squeezed home alter a good race. At tho turn into the straight Katua was in front, just clear of Crawford but in. thn run home this pair compounded, and Draft, who came from a lon* way back, won by a neck. Tnc winner is liow trained by J. O'Neill at New Plymouth, mid seems to have settled down a uood deal. His victory was anticipated by his connections, and Hie pr:cc paid was a eood one. Mu!"n Kilt was the only Withdrawal from ?lip Manaia Handicap, in which a field of \kp\xq liiiiMl up at tho harrier. Te I'oti and I!cd Lupin wwp Ihe first lo move but Afterthought and Plantation sooii ran io the head 01 , a flairs, and To Koti dvouDPd right out of it. Across the bottom Con the Shnngliraun took second p'aee, but he could not dispose of l'!;niUilioii, who finished well under the stick. NfuUiraunui was iwo leiißllis away third, and (hen came .•tftorlhoiijjiir. f?rd Lupin, and Mendip. in that order. Mendip began very slowly, but he finished very well, iuul will be better suited over a longer couvse. After the above race the stewards mot to hear a complaint against Conquest, who wc9 alleged to have struck Con iiie Shftughrnun over the- Iwad when finisliins. Aftev henrinß evidence it was decided that the complaint wns lint borne rmf. After fiioh an indifferent exhibition as was given to-day it will come a> no sur , - nrifp to find that the L'gmont Hub ,vili in future delete gentlemen riders' events from its nrnsramnn , . He got rather a severe fall in a steeplechase on April 9, and had just recovered in lime to ride at Hobnrt on April 27. He mot with another accident in Hie hurdle race who!) the much travelled Yellow Aster, a horse who had previously raced in five out of the six Stales in the Commonwealth fell and broke his neck. Gray sustained a slight concussion of the brain, and was removed to the General Hospital. He was fortunate in gettiiiß off with even this injury, for he fell under Yellow Astor's hoofs, and the horse in his death struggles lashed oul, wildly, but the jockey, more by lunlc than anything else, was not struck. C. O'Neill, writing from Tlobavt on the following day, stated (hat firay was improving, but would be out of the saddle for some considerable time.

Mention of O'Neill brings to mind tho fact that lie is riding with wonderful .success iizain, and his cursor in Tasmania is soiiK'thiiis: on a par with tho iiininpa which iio liad when hp crossed to' Melbourne a few years afro. The Ohokebnro cast-off, Sharpshooter, was taken to Adelaide for the Goodwood ITnndicAj), but broke down a few days before the race. Paislie (half-sister to Ermonjjarclc's dam), now racing in Melbourne, started a hot favourite in the St. Vincent's Purse at the Charity Merlin? last week, uwil ran home at the bead of 10 runner*.
