BUTTER-FAT COMPETITIONS.

'■ > SOME SUGGESTIONS. The president of. the Wairarapa and East Coa-t P. and A. Society (Mr. W. Howard Booth), referring at the annual meeting to the. society's last butter-fat competition, remarked that 21 cows were entered for the last competition, Mr. Say- ■ well winning for the second time with the same cow. The stamp of cow entered had very much improved since the first competition was held in 1008. The winning cow's total points were 83.31, as against 8-1.87. the previous year. The value of ,this .competition to the dairy farmer, said Mr. Booth, could not be overestimated, .and there was a very great deal to be learned from it of the highest interest to all connected with this class of farming in New Zealand. He believed he was right in affirming that it was the best style oi competition ot all those held for the dairy cow by societies throughout the Dominion. The committee had been fortunate in securing the services of those 'who have liad to manage the competition, both in recording the weights and tests, and in the milking. . Mr Hodder and liis staff'had carried out their duties in such an. efficient manner that no single complaint or even remark had been made, except of satisfaction. The president said lie would strongly- suggest that people be allowed in future to inspect the cows competing, at the milking sheds after milking-if desired, in order that ocular demonstration might be given as to what constitutes a good dairy cow, for he was convinced that all connected with dairying would have been benefited by a sight of the herd last year. Without doubt, the cows were a splendid collection. An inspection, say, on stated-days, would be of considerable value and importance to the younger and inexperienced dairy farmer who has to choose and buy his own cows. -
