AUSTRALIANS' FIRST MATCH. MACARTNEY"SCORES 84. By Tfelesraph—Press Association— Copyright. London, May G. The Australian cricket team commenced I its lour with a match against Nottingham to-day. The weather was warm, but cloudy, and the attendance at the opening was small., but increased to 1000 during tho afternoon. The pilch was soft but drying. The Australians scored 21S, liie innings lusting 230 minutes. Nottingham's bowling was only moderate, but the fielding improved during the game. The display of batting, outside that given by Macartney, was below expectations. The following arc the teams:— Nottingham.—A. O. Jones, Crawford, G. Gunn, J. Gunn. J. Hardstalf, J. Iremonger, Riley, AY. I'ayton, T. Oates, T. AVass, and E. Alletson. Australia.—S. E. Gregory, E. Minnett; AY. Bardsley, G. R. Hazlitt, C. G. Macartney, AV. Carkeek, J. T. Matthews, E. R, Mayne, W. J. AYhitty, C. B. Jennings, and J. AY. M'Laren. AUSTRALIANS' FIRST INNINGS. Jones won the toss, and sent the visitors in to bat. AYass and Riley opened the attack. The first ball yielded four byes, and tho first wicket .fell at 28, i Bardsley being dismissed by a brilliant ] single-handed catch by Jones at second j slip. Macartney followed. The bowling was uncertain in length, and batsmen seized | favourable chances to score. At 3G Gregory got his leg before to Iremonger. Tho Australian captain had been 70 minutes ot tho wickets, but his timing was faulty, and he was missed when he had scored 28 at deep point by Jones, off AYass. Two wickets for 77—Macartney 24.
Minnett filled the vacancy, and tho cen- | tury appeared after eighty-five minutes' ploy. Macartney reached his 50 in seventy minutes, after getting going by free cricket, pulling and off-driving. Tho partnership, ended by Iremonger smartly catching Minnett at point. Tho batsmnn had been badly missed when his score was four, at short-leg by Riley, off Iremonger, Three wickets for 122—Macartney 51. Macartney and Mayne carried the total to ICO, when tho former lost his wicket by hitting across a ball from Riley. Macartney had been 115 minutes at the wickets, giving ml admirable, stylish, and chanceles3 innings. His score included eleven fourei'6. Mayne was caught at tho wickets by Oates oif Wass. He had scored 19. Tho weather was dull when Matthews joined Jennings, and the latter hit up a skier oif Riley, which the wicketkceper secured. Six wickets for 184. Hazlitt was the newcomer, and. tho wicket at this stage was drying rapidly and playing easily. Matthews brought his scorn to 25 by off-driv-ing, but then lost Hazlitt, whoso score was 10, Wass bowling tho latter. Seven i'or 210. Carkeek made It, but was then stumped by Oates oft' Ironiotlger. Ho was badly missed in the previous over, a skier oif Riley being dropped. Eight wickets for 231. Matthews, whose batting had become quieter, was then caught low down by Jones, at second slip, off Iremonger—2.32 —9—27. M'Laren was next, but was bowled by Wass before ho had scored. Whitty was not out with 10 to his credit, including three fours off his first over. NOTTS AT THE WICKETS. Jones and George Guun opened for Notts to tho bowling of Whitty and Hazlitt, who both bad good pace. The first two overs realised byes to the boundary. When Jones had readied G Hazlitt took his off stump with a "yorker." G. Gunn'a score was 9. 23 —I—o.1 —0. The bowlers changed ends, and as a result the new man, Hardstaff, was smartly stumped l.y I Carkeek, off WniUy—3o—2—3. The weather at this stage was dusky. When the score was 48 M'Laren relieved Whitty. Hazlitt was bowling well and was awkward to play. Tho fielding of tho Australians was smart. Georgo Gunn, in attempting to glance a ball of M'Larcu's second over, was bowled. His score was 22, and he had taken seventy minutes to compile it —53—3 —22. John Gunn's score was 13. Psyton came next, but did not remain, long, being caught by Matthews at point off M'Laren before he had opened his account—ss—4—o. Crawford joined John Gunn, and. they were together until stumps were drawn. Gunn's score was 32, obtained by excellent cricket, and Crawford's 14, all obtained oft' one over from Hazlitt.
