SOCIAL AND PERSONAL.

The Girls' Realm Guild. A fete, organised by the members of (he Lady Plunket Centre of the Girls' Realm Guild, for the purpose of raising funds to pay off the expenses incidental to their club room, was opened in the Congregational Schoolroom, Courtenay Place, on Saturday afternoon, by Mrs. A. K. Newman. The Girls' Vealra Guild has' a record in jts few years of existence, of kindly deeds accomplished, and was deserving of a larger attendance than was present in the afternoon. It was a very apt remark that Mrs. Newman made in tho course of her opening speech—that it was always the busy people who found time to do these things, and not those who liad little to do.

Stalls decorated with the colours of tho guild, heliotrope and white, were ranged around the room, the stallholders being as follows.—Fancy stall, tho Misses Hurley (2), and Moss; combined flower and teacup stalls, the Misses Batten, Dixon, and Malcolm (2); sweet stall, Misses Moss, Edwards, and Mueller; fish pond, Miss Price and Pinckney; nail driving, Miss Hurler; fortune telling, Miss Cook and Miss O'Reilly; hat trimming, Miss Atkins; refreshments, the Misses Hurley, Hamilton, Dimant, Young, Harding, Wright. Recitations by some small children were given, and an orchestra, composed of Messrs. Drury, Moor, and Archer, played selections during the afternoon and evening. The fete was the Inst event given by the Lady Plunket Centre, as it has amalgamated with the other branch of the guild. Miss Coates, who has always displayed a keen interest in its welfare, was present at the opening of the fete. A Maslerton Dance. The opening of the new Assembly Hall at the Maslerton District High Sdiool, was made the occasion for holding a Scholars' Plain and Fancy Dress Dance on Friday evening. In addition to present pupi'ls of tho school, there wore past scholars and adults attending tho function, about six hundred, in all, being present. The arrangements were excellently carried out, Mr. W. H. Jnekson and the school staff being untiring in their care for the enjoyment of everyone. Competitions in connection with the dancing were held, and the prizes were presented by Mrs. P. K. Cook, tho judges being: Mesdamcs Cook, Moodie, Tabuteau, and Graham. Mr. and Mrs. Hastings Braddel, of Nelson, are visiting Napier. The engagement is announcc-d of Miss Rosa Hawkei, daughter of Mr. J. Hawken, Wicksteed Street, Wangnmii, to Dr. Tom Wilkin, of Hamilton, Waikato. Subscriptions for the purchasing of a picture from the Baillio collection by the members of the Pioneer Club are coming in in a satisfactory manner. It is specially pointed out, however, that it is desirable, that all intending subscribers should send in their donations as soon as possible, as the committee wishes to get the necessary sum in hand, and purchase the picture for presenting to the National Gallery before other selectors have mado their choice of the smaller pictures. The visit of the "Our Girl's" Branch of tho Victoria League to tho Baillie Picture Gallery will take place on Wednesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, instead of this afternoon, as had originally been arranged.
