RAILWAY TO MIRAMAR.
'A REPORT PROMISED. A somewhat ambitious project—tho «« tension of. tho railway from To Aro station to Miramar—was laid ltefore the Minister for Railways (the Hon. A. M. Myers) yesterday by a deputation renre-' seuting the residents of tho borough. The spokesmen were Messrs, W. H. D. Bell (member for the Suburbs electorate) and 11. N. M'Leod (Mayor of Miramar). Mr. Bell remarked that the. line ot route was obstructed by a hill, which had been tunnelled for tramway purposes, but not for a railway. The idea of continuing the lin<> to Miramar, nevertheless, wanted consideration. The suburb vaj likely to become a manufacturing area. This was indicated by the fact that tho Gas Company had already established works there and that the Union Company had also selected the neighbourhood for the establishment of large repair works. The borough contained extensive flats, which were mere suitable for manalaehiring than for residential purposes. On behalf of tha deputation, Mr. Bell asked the Minister to have inquiries made by his engineers with a view to obtaining an estimate of tho cost of a tunnel. Mr. Bell also mentioned that the Harbour Board intended to form a reclamation area of about .thirty acres, at tho head of Evans Bay, some part of which might ba obtained for railway purposes. Mr. Jl'Leod supplemented Mr, Bell's remarks, and stated that the railway proposal had been raised afresh because borough residents believed that a new era of progress in Miramar was commencing, Tho Minister promised to consult with the Minister for Public Works with a view to obtaining tho desired information.
