A few disappointed sportsmen who returned to tho city this evening had only accounts of wretched sport to relate. There are generally soveral.good bags on the first day of tho season, but this year most experienced sportsmen liavc had to bo content with a brace. Quail and pheasants aro reported to bo very scarce. No reliable estimate can yet be given of the number of shooting licenses issued, but two thousand licenso forms have been distributed to agents throughout tho district, end probably half that number will be purchased. Timaru, May 2. •It is reported that thcro are a good number of game birds in the district, and good bags wero made in several places on the opening day of tho season. The Washdyko lagoon, beside tho railway near tlio town, is tabooed to gunners, and is a pretty sight with tho birds flocking thero'for safety.
